The full name of Prince Charles is Charles Philip Arthur George.

When the heir becomes the monarch, they can use one of their middle names as monarch if they so choose, rather than the name they have been known by throughout their lives.  A number of kings in the past have done just that.

When Charles becomes King, what name, in your view, will he use as King?

Please vote and discuss.

He probably doesn't want to steal being the next George from his grandson, so I imagine that despite the stereotype of King Charles, he'll be Charles III.

I'll go out on a limb and say Charles will use the name King George VII, which would honor his grandfather King George VI.

It would also honor his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who is the daughter of George VI, his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who was the wife of George VI, and his grandson, Prince George.

Prince Charles loved his grandmother very much.

George. The name Charles has a bad track record, as mentioned earlier, and the royals are strong traditionalists.

This.

It's pretty commonly accepted that Charles won't be king under that name.

The world could use a King Arthur.

This is true.

But somehow I doubt Charles is exactly the one to restore Camelot.

Actually, I believe it would be King Arthur I, As King Arthur and Camelot is simply a myth.

we did almost have one, he was Henry VIII's older brother but died before their father did, and he was married to Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

Exactly, being Charles is part of Prince Charles's brand. I see no reason why he would change enough, especially now that he has a grandson named George.

Though it would be funny if Charles became George VII and George became Charles III.

Why are we assuming Queen Elizabeth won't outlive him and continue reigning for another 20 or so years? Tongue

Well, you are correct, nothing is assured in life, however, at age 90, this is what would be referred to as a "reasonable" assumption.

So? Sweden's had a number of legendary or quasi-historical King Carls.

A better argument against "Arthur II" would be that they restarted numbering Edwards after the Conquest.

My understanding is that Kings before the Norman invasion aren't counted in numbering: Edward I reigned after Edward the Confessor for instance.
