What is your opinion of them and do they actually work?

Yes,

They work. Dating sites provide a huge benefit for people looking to find a partner in a social environment where so few potential partners cross their path. You just cut the wheat from the chaff so much quicker.

The real secret - get your new found love-match off the digital screen as fast as possible and meet the person in real life.

Reason:

(a) The longer you text your doting sweetheart before meeting, the more pain you will endure when you realise you were just falling in love with your phone.

(b) It helps avoid fake accounts.

On match.com, I found 87% of the accounts to be fake. Whilst it is true I would like to meet a young Russian 28 yo beauty, I just cannot see myself forking out $4,000 to fly her to Australia for our first date.

(c) Real relationships need to start in real life.

Hide your online status, so if you hit a purple patch and chat to more than one person per night, then the other potential dates will not see that you are chatting.

Just my two cents.

I went online dating a couple of years ago, and 5 weeks later and a few dates, I connected with my current girlfriend.

She said I was ten times better than her ex-husband, and that made me feel pretty special.

We will celebrate our 2 year anniversary on 24 January 2017.

They're not great, but for a lot of adults, they're the easiest way to find a romantic partner. They can work for some people, but a lot of it is luck, and whether or not you happen to find someone compatible at the right time. It's very hit or miss.
I've come across a lot of creeps, douchebags, etc.

But I did meet my boyfriend online, and he's still here almost 3 years later.

I used the Bumble once, actually met my current girlfriend there of 6 months. No previous experience so I guess YMMV. She told me many horror stories of online dating as a female.
