Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump
Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never "mocked" a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him "groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!

Is it possible that Donald Trump will spend his entire presidency tweeting this stuff.

It's a political oddity unlike any other.

C'mon, Beet, if The Donald invited the entire audience to a party 5 years ago, they'd all RSVP, YES!

Great news if you miss the ShrubWatch.com era strain of celebrity liberalism that largely functioned as a convenient foil for Bush apologists in the later years of his presidency. It's politics as reality television spectacle while Trump's cronies loot public assets and Ryan's caucus remake the federal government. Every media outlet that led this morning's coverage with this headline is wearing a scarlet letter of frivolity.

Truth.

The only thing more pathetic than President-elect Pussygrabber lying and whining is the media pretending the whole thing is of national interest. The media have abandoned their duties in favor of making money promoting circuses.

Think of the poor, defenseless, helpless hollywood actors. ;_;

I can understand the part about journalists being vilified, but including actors in that made me roll my eyes.

Did she really say that?  That's cringeworthy.  I think I will agree with Megan McCain who said that comments such as these are what made Trump win.  And as much as I hate Trump, he's right about Streep being an overrated actress (even she has admitted it).

She didn't call wealthy celebrities victims. She just said that they were vilified. Super-rich Republicans say the same stuff about, e.g., the Kochs or private equity being vilified. It's not false in either case. Doesn't make them victims, or unprivileged.

He is triggered by everything. In life, people are going to talk about you, but you can't go off like this and it's especially important for the President to understand this.

She didn't attack anyone but Trump and it's funny to me how Trump somehow equals the country as a whole. Most of the country doesn't talk like him or act like him, so this idea that he is America is absolutely ludicrous.

With all that said, when did Trump cease being a celebrity? He is known for The Apprentice and being in the tabloids for his personal life, so he is a celebrity and a part of the elite.

Frankly Meryl Streep is one of the greatest actresses of all time. She's at the top of the list. Poor little donnie got his feelings hurt and so he lashed out at a movie great.

It's to be expected of him, it's his M.O.

And this is our President.

Another 20 million dollar a picture fading actress, who, of course, can perfectly empathize with the plight of the working classes, hijacks an entertainment venue, full of leftist multi millionaire entertainers of questionable talent, opens her big mouth to give her leftist biased view of public affairs in America, yet again.

I guess it's called freedom of speech.

And how, exactly, does Trump and his cabinet "empathize with the plight of the working classes"? You know, the Trump who is of questionable political talent....

Meryl Streep has an extremely long career for a Hollywood actress. As long as hers is I can only compare her to such types as Geraldine Page, Gloria Swanson, Jane Wyman, Jessica Tandy, Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Sally Field, Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, and Katharine Hepburn. Mae West and Phyllis Diller? Yes -- they too -- even if they were parody. She has a longer career than Audrey Hepburn. An actress active in cinema until age 60, like the late Carrie Fisher, is rare.

Male actors have no such problem; elderly dramatic actors are far more common.

It could be that most movies are made for young audiences, and in such movies there is much tolerance for aging men so long as they still can show virility in violence and power. Females must be sexy. There just aren't so many 'matronly' roles. A not-very-distinguished male actor can keep movie roles well into his fifties, but an older female actor has to be really, really good. Most female acting careers are over by age 35 when the women can no longer excite producers and directors on the casting couch who find more 'exciting' women or girls.

Most actors and actresses (except those in porn) are intellectuals; the demands for intellect in acting are great. Donald Trump will not be popular in Hollywood... or academia. Non-intellectuals can get along with intellectuals as long as they recognize the practical value of broad learning and abstract thought.

Meryl Streep has the right to her opinion and got a stage on which to make it. She did a fine performance. In view of polling that suggests that over 50% of the American public believes that Donald Trump will be anything from simply incompetent to unspeakably awful, she represents a large part of the view of Americans.

By the way -- what is right about the behavior by Donald Trump that she  excoriated?

Her criticisms of Donald Trump's rhetoric targeting minorities and immigrants, and his horrendous mocking of a disabled reporter, all of which deserve constant criticism, were applause worthy. However, for Meryl Streep, the epitome of Hollywood elitism and snobbishness, to come forth and proclaim "oh, woe is us" regarding the real (and not entirely undeserved) vilification of the Hollywood social scene is annoying. Yes, the entertainment industry is often laudably inclusive of minorities and immigrants (although there are still some real struggles with inequality), but it is not some endangered, underprivileged group. They fear whom, exactly? I'd wager their venom would be primarily directed at "rednecks" and "white trash" who "simply don't get us."

Hollywood is out of touch. They live a lifestyle that is incompatible with the social justice they often proclaim from their elegant pulpits. So no, I don't care what Meryl Streep had to say. I appreciate the performances that her and those in her industry do to express themselves and entertain us, but she can stop the "woe is us, the unimaginably rich and famous" shtick.
