You guys will handle this storm better than Raleigh or Atlanta did. Your cities are smart enough to own snowplows.

Most snow in one storm I've ever seen is roughly 25 inches.

We handled it terribly traffic was totally gridlocked people had to abandon cars everywhere . Lol at snow plows , nothing in our area as been plowed yet so we are stuck in our house . Though we will be getting them from Seattle by tommorow due to an emergency declared by the state .

The problem is it was 40 degrees at 4 and suddenly at 7 Tuesday we got thundersnow .

Except our roads are not equipped to handle this much snow , I mean our city has trouble dealing with 2 inches of snow let alone 12

Does the northeast typically get more snow than Oregon? Didn't know.
The climate of the lowland Pacific Northwest generally means winter is rainy with a few snowfall events each winter that are usually light (a couple inches of snow at most).  Every few years, a more significant fall occurs... but even then, 12" is close to the record for Portland.

The Northeast, especially coastal areas, tends to get big snowstorms.  They have been especially common in the past 10 years which has been highly unusual.  The graph below shows the number of "NESIS" (NorthEast Snow Impact Scale) rated storms that have a standardized minimum impact on the northeast.

In general, the number of storms had been on a slow downward decline until the mid 2000s, consistent with early global warming forecasts.  In the most recent decade, however, there were a huge number of storms.

There could be a whole bunch of reasons for this... but there are some major changes occurring in the north atlantic ocean.  Beginning in the 1990s, ocean heat content began to rise to new heights... adding nearly 1*F of heat to the top 700 meters of ocean in about 15 years (1994-2009).  Now in just 6 years all of that heat has disappeared.

That kind of heat (and moisture) could certainly help explain the blocking patterns that have shunted storms to the east coast of the U.S>

This could have all kinds of implications for global climate since that heat would bring milder weather to Europe and has done a huge number warming up Greenland and melting sea ice on the Atlantic side of the Arctic.  A return to pre-1990 cooler conditions could mean less melting and more ice formation in those areas again.

I have to vouch for Old School Republican on this....

I suspect what a lot of you in the Midwest/Northeast/Central Atlantic regions don't totally get is how quickly snow shifts to ice out here, and how ill prepared and financed state/county/city governments are to handle an event like this....

There was something akin that happened when a lived in Houston, Texas a few years back and there was an ice event that caused over 5,000 accidents (Many serious) in a single day....

Now, when I lived in Ohio we had a blizzard come through one Winter that dumped two feet of snow in less than 48 hours, and everything shut down for a few days.... so all of y'all making fun of Portland having a "state of emergency" for a foot of snow, also sometimes shut everything down for extreme snow events.... Wink
