This is an interesting hypothetical that pins the populist elements of the Democratic Party against the fiscally conservative, socially liberal-to-moderate elements of the Republican Party. In this scenario, both parties would follow the lead of their candidates and the tone set by them; thus, there could be reversals on several notable policy areas - such as Democrats being open to limits on abortions.

Yea, that is the big takeaway from 2016 - Nominate as centrist a Democrat that you can find!

Edwards is a centrist on only a handful of issues. And is on par with Clinton, if not to her left on many others.

Baker easily (cause he would be a solid conservative on economics if he was in the Whitehouse instead of the Mass Governor Mansion)

JBE because I'm a partisan hack, but this is probably one of the most demotivating matchups possible for me.

There are some Democrats I might vote for Baker over, but JBE is not one of them.

I don't like either, but I would take a Dem over a Rep.

I would probably vote for JBE, not enthusiastically, but not reluctantly, either.

May I ask why Martinez? Condoleeza Rice, Lisa Murkowski, or Brian Sandoval fill similar roles without the corruption/drunk baggage.

Baker/Martinez. I voted for Clinton precisely because I was turned off by Trump's populism and focus on nativism. Bel Edwards would just be Dem Trump. No thanks.

But Hillary's populism and class warfare is just fine by your snobby standards?  LOL, half her ads were targeting Trump for helping out his billionaire buddies on Wall Street if elected.  I even watched a gem where she literally ACCUSED him of being in favor of free trade.  It's not like she ran to his right on, well, anything.

Anyway, EASILY the Republican.

Hard decision considering Edwards is a centrist styled democrat and Baker is a centrist styled Republican. I don't think I would be voting in that hypothetical, in my opinion.

Well, "young conservative," I hope you don't call socially liberal Republicans RINOs then. Smiley  Because one of these tickets is indisputably more conservative than the other, and it's not the one with the Southerner.

Enthusiasm depends on how JBE develops himself in the coming years, but obviously JBE.

Lets dispel with this fiction that a centrist blue dog could still win a Democratic nomination.
