Punishing the groups that voted against you after winning an election is one of the trademark tactics of dictators. Doing it after losing an election makes much less sense, as does punishing groups that actually did vote for your side, but here we are.

I wonder if this is the last example of Obama Derangement Syndrome or if we'll get another next week.

Josefina Vidal, a top diplomat when it comes to U.S. relations with Cuba, said the move will encourage trafficking and other similar issues to come to an end.

"We will put an end to an encouragement to issues or things like alien smuggling, trafficking of persons, migration fraud, which was affecting U.S. and Cuban national security," Vidal said.

Can we cut down on the whining just a tad?

Absolutely disgusting. We need to open up those borders massively. Obama has been a colossal disappointment on the immigration issue.

Love how it puts Trump in an awful position. Shows the deplorables too who don't care about Cubans because of politics but hate Mexicans and the evil mooslims.

You don't play with people's lives to score cheap political points. That's the Republican way.

Weird to see Trumpists suddenly supporting illegal immigration. FWIW, I do agree that this is a bad move from Obama, but I have never supported Trump-like positions on immigration in general...

No, because a wall is not necessary.  Obama's done a fine job getting criminals out of the country without needing a stupid wall.

FWIW, the US is accepting many of the Guantanamo refugees and allowing at least 15k visas over he next four years at the embassy in Havana.

And you voted for Trump?

If this is an elaborate joke, you've succeeded in confusing me for a long time.

Smilo isn't all about Trump because of immigration but because he views it as a patriotic movement of love.

I actually agree with this in principle (we should accept Cuban defectors as refugees and not give them a special path to green cards) but this is not how these kinds of decisions should be made.

Holy crap I agree with Santander on something.

I don't see the point of this.

If anything, this provision should be extended to all refugees.

I'm not against classifying fleeing Cubans as refugees, since many (though definitely not all) genuinely are. But having one set of rules for them and not refugees from other countries is insane. Consistent immigration policies are the only fair way to do it.

Note: this applies too to Ted Kennedy greasing the wheels to get Irish people more green cards

I'm guessing Trump could reverse this pretty easily if he wants to.

No reason the Cubans should get any special privileges other foreign asylum seekers do not get.

I heard there were Cuban "refugees" who regularly (twice a year) go back to Cuba to visit friends and family.  You know what you're not if you go back to your country of origin regularly?  A refugee.

The Republican hard-on for Cubans (and Israelis) is interesting. But I take it if you guys are so supportive of refugees, you'll welcome them from everywhere in the world: Cuba, elsewhere in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, etc...)
