So i guess all the liberals who said Trump was going to destroy democracy decided to self fulfill their prophecy? Also in response to Arch the reason I started the conversation in such a manner was in anticipation of comments like our good friend Gass's.

Are we seriously chirping our OP for posting this?  This place is enough of an echo chamber, it's fine to have a "conservative" spin on an article once in a blue moon (which, this doesn't ... John Lewis actually said that).

Well he is the president-elect. The Earth is round. That doesn't mean he is legitimate in everyone's mind.

After the crap Obama got despite being a good person and winning the popular vote (which Trump isn't and didn't) don't expect us to play a sad violin for Cheeto Mussolini

Is he suggesting that Trump's parent were unmarried when he was born?

Donald Trump refused to say that he’d respect the results of this election.

That’s a direct threat to our democracy.

There are controversies surrounding Trump's victory, such as Russia's hacking of the DNC and releasing of hit pieces via Wikileaks to harm Clinton, the potentially intentional interference by FBI Director Comey just prior to the election, and the fact that he lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. Those are legitimate complaints, two of which deserve further investigation.

However, Trump is our President-elect, whether we like him or not and whether we perceive our Electoral College system as democratic or not. And yes, he is legitimate.

He isn't legitimate, not even remotely. If Trump doesn't like being called illegitimate, he can resign the office and resume running his business.

Trump certainly does lack the legitimacy steaming from the popular vote win, while still being legally elected per archaic but still existing stystem.

The popular vote is meaningless when it comes to legitimacy, and more meaningless than ever given California's bizarre system that drove down GOP turnout massively.

The popular vote is meaningless when it comes to who legally gets elected President, but not to legitimacy. Losing the popular vote by over 3 million is not a ringing endorsement by the public as a whole. Republican turnout wasn't down in California, they just refused to vote for Trump, which is evidenced by seven Republican members of Congress being re-elected even though their districts voted for Clinton.

The citizens of the United States did not popularly elect Donald Trump, the system that was put in place (ironically) to prevent someone unqualified or unprepared to serve in the position did.

I agree that Trump is the legitimate President but the electoral college is not a legitimate way to pick a President.

Exactly. I can't get over how easy it is for Republicans to conveniently overlook all the underhanded things that they did to Obama, and yet, when it comes to Trump....

I'll give John Lewis his freedom of speech. He's speaking from his heart that Trump is not legitimate in his eyes.

I respect Lewis a great deal, and he's a civil rights hero, but I think he's starting to lose it. Between his disgusting attacks on Bernie last year and this, he needs to retire.
