Cuomo runs for President in 1992 and defeats Bill Clinton in a contentious primary, and in a bid to appeal to southern Democrats and unite the party, selects Bob Graham as his running mate as his running mate.

How does it play out?

Mario Cuomo is charismatic but just as liberal as Dukakis. He does better than Dukakis but he still loses. I think Bush would probably get at least 310 electoral votes.

I'm aware of that but my point still stands. Cuomo is too liberal to win unless Perot sticks around to split the vote, which I don't think he would have done had the Democratic nominee been Cuomo rather than Clinton.

But having thought about it had the Democratic nominee been Cuomo, Perot have won most of the conservative Democrats' votes, which would give him a serious chance of winning the election. So actually in this scenario a President Perot is very possible, but I have hard time seeing Cuomo winning the election. He was just to liberal to win in the 1990s.

I believe A Bush-Perot-Cuomo race would be deadlocked. Here's my map

Cuomo 260
Bush 244
Perot 34

Cuomo wins in house

Which could very well have happened, it would have been a very real possibility, and I think a deadlocked Electoral College, which would have thrown the Presidential Election to the House, which in turn would almost certainly have elected Cuomo, would have been the only way Cuomo would have won. He would not have won the Electoral College outright. And that map definately could have happened, it makes sense.

Is Perot still running? Because the headline doesn't imply this.

That's important to know because that changes everything. Without Perot Bush would have beaten Cuomo easily but with Perot in there it becomes a very close election that Cuomo could have won (albeit I think he could only have won if the election went to the House).

I think Cuomo could win, I guess I'd put the odds at 50-50. There are a few reasons I think he could win, starting with incumbency exhaustion. It's just harder to win after being in power for 12 years, even with a relatively successful presidency.

Also, I agree, he is a little more liberal than someone you might expect in the 90s, but if his campaign was better run, he could pull it off. I mean, Dukakis had the problem of not only being to liberal, but also having a terribly run campaign behind him.

Still though, Bush also has a pretty good chance of winning, like I said, 50-50 odds.

Cuomo victory:

Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY)/Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) - 308 EV
President George H. W. Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN) - 229 EV
Businessman Ross Perot (I-TX)/Admiral James Stockdale (I-CA) - 1 EV

Bush victory:

Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY)/Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) - 264 EV
President George H. W. Bush (R-TX)/Vice President Dan Quayle (R-IN) - 273 EV
Businessman Ross Perot (I-TX)/Admiral James Stockdale (I-CA) - 1 EV

Many people don't know this, but NJ was a surprisingly competitive state in 1992. It was one of the top 5 closest according to Wikipedia, not to mention they had voted Republican in every presidential election since 1968.
