My best friend, who is a lesbian (or says she is), is now dating a friend of mine (a guy), who apparently broke up with another female friend of mine, because she wanted to be with someone else. Ugh.

What is the problem here?

It's just really strange feeling, she changed her sexuality, etc. and I have to deal with the relationship's consequences. Tongue
Yeah, it is her lifestyle choice.

Like being a dork is yours?

Impossible. We all made this choice.

I've turned into a cliché.  I'm a middle-aged man who's spent the past month trying to track down a guy half my age, with whom I had a 5-minute conversation.

Basically, I have a group that rotates houses every month to eat dinner and play bridge.  In December, while waiting for the food to be set out, I more or less stumbled into a conversation with some young guy I had never seen before.  It was a good conversation--basically everything he said reminded me of my best friends from back in college--but I didn't think any more about it.  We ate in different rooms, and I happened to catch him out of the corner of my eye as I was sitting down to bridge, when he gave me a big smile.

It wasn't until afterwards that I wondered if he had been flirting with me.  (I'm still not sure.  I have a couple of young co-workers who seem to try to get my attention in order to smile at me, and I'm pretty sure they're both straight.  There may be some dynamic going on that I'm not understanding.)  After that night, I wavered for three days before I decided to try and get in touch with the guy.

I figured he was some college student renting a room from the party host, so I sent an e-mail to the host asking him to forward my contact info.  The first e-mail got lost, so I eventually sent a second one, which he did forward to his roommate.

Last Tuesday, the roommate messaged me on Facebook.  The chat was really awkward, and after a few minutes I discovered why, when he made a comment about being a model.  I expressed surprise and said that I hadn't paid much attention to what he looked like, other than him being 23-ish and having dark curly hair.  The roommate replied that he was 43 and bald.  After I described the original guy, he explained that the young guy had been his one-night stand.  Then he promised to forward my contact info to the guy.

And in the week since, I've heard nothing, so I'm ready to give up.

Which is a little frustrating, because this seemed like a rare opportunity.  I haven't been on a date in years, and then unexpectedly I meet someone I enjoy talking to.  And not only do I enjoy talking to him, but he's actually gay and single.

Went to the UCLA protest march organized by a socialist association. It was raining like crazy and all the clothes I was wearing need a wash, but I'm glad I was there. I'm not fond of demonstrating in general (it's only the second time in my life), but it was all worth it.

I spent the final moments of the Obama years playing Super Mario 64 DS and listening to the credits of Mario Kart: Double Dash. I've been doing the exact same since, but mixed with watching Cheers as well.

I will be in the USA from mid to late March; NY, Orlando, St Augustine. Will visit either Boston or Philadelphia if anyone fancies saying hello.

So I was just involved in something of an altercation with a Trump supporter at the women's March in Seattle. He was shouting abuse into the crowd, so I grabbed his sign trying act "all in good fun" (admittedly not the least childish thing I could have done) at which point he tackled me and slammed me into the ground. Some of the other protesters pulled him off me and made sure we we're both alright. Just goes to show that it's us white dudes who continue to be the problem and the women were the sane ones throughout the situation.

When this post-election craze fades out and you regain some semblance of sanity, you will take a good look back on your behavior throughout these months and be very ashamed. At least I hope so, for your own sake.

I agree. It was definitely a dick move on my part. I was just very surprised in the moment how quickly it devolved. If he had just yelled "That's my political speech and you're censoring it." I would have felt awful. I didn't post to brag, but to caution Trump supporters and opponents to be more careful than I was.

Some of the aging conservatives at my church are honestly pretty terrible. I chose this religious community for myself and so I believe I'm obliged to cherish and to some extent defend it, but some of them make it pretty hard. A lot of these people are wonderful but some are simply garden-variety post-truth goons and it can get pretty damn frustrating.

Any chance you could be able engage some of them in a serious conversation and help them see things from your perspective? Not necessarily convince them, but at least build a bridge of some kind. I think you're one of the leftists on this forum who would be most capable to do that.

Oh, there's not really much ideological daylight between the ones I get along with and the ones I don't, it's almost all personality. There's this one guy who's a really hardcore Trumpista and would probably tread the fumi-e without a care as long as the daimyō "wasn't PC"; this is someone who seeks me out to complain about "the feminists" to even though he seems to know it bothers me.

Hey, I bet you'd be even worse at discussing politics with Hillary people if she'd won than I am with these people, buddy.

Yeah, it's obvious these days that there are many people whose only goal in politics is to stick it to "the other side" - I mean, look at Santander (though it happens on the left as well, of course). Not much point in seeking those out, though it's a shame.
