I got into a screaming match at work with an Emory student about the upper middle class and their politics. Eventually it devolved into her holding her hand in my face and shouting "HILLBILLY" every time I tried to start a sentence. This is the first time I've ever been tempted to take a swing at someone during a political discussion.

Just impulsively outed myself by calling myself an Irish lesbian in response to a joke my dad was telling. Nobody seemed to notice or ask what I meant when I said "me" to my dad's "What do you call an Irish lesbian?"

...interesting.

Out of morbid curiosity, what was your father's intended punchline?

I think I might have just broken a toe. I don't have time to deal with this now. FML.

Is it just me or do SJWs/far-left social liberals keep getting more and more irksome?

T***p's campaign and his victory has tended to unleash the worst kind of attitudes contained within mainstream American liberalism (elitism, class contempt, self-righteousness, obsession with identity politics, etc.). I really hope this is a temporary blip rather than a trend that will continue to expand.

This has all been unleashed for a long time now.  You're just waking up to it.  Too late, unfortunately.. far too late.  Now we will all pay the price.

Went to the UCLA protest march organized by a socialist association. It was raining like crazy and all the clothes I was wearing need a wash, but I'm glad I was there. I'm not fond of demonstrating in general (it's only the second time in my life), but it was all worth it.

So I was just involved in something of an altercation with a Trump supporter at the women's March in Seattle. He was shouting abuse into the crowd, so I grabbed his sign trying act "all in good fun" (admittedly not the least childish thing I could have done) at which point he tackled me and slammed me into the ground. Some of the other protesters pulled him off me and made sure we we're both alright. Just goes to show that it's us white dudes who continue to be the problem and the women were the sane ones throughout the situation.
I like you, but you had that coming. That's just the truth. He had no right to literally do harm unto you but that's about par for the course. Violence begets violence.

...

When this post-election craze fades out and you regain some semblance of sanity, you will take a good look back on your behavior throughout these months and be very ashamed. At least I hope so, for your own sake.

Some of the aging conservatives at my church are honestly pretty terrible. I chose this religious community for myself and so I believe I'm obliged to cherish and to some extent defend it, but some of them make it pretty hard. A lot of these people are wonderful but some are simply garden-variety post-truth goons and it can get pretty damn frustrating.

Any chance you could be able engage some of them in a serious conversation and help them see things from your perspective? Not necessarily convince them, but at least build a bridge of some kind. I think you're one of the leftists on this forum who would be most capable to do that.

Oh, there's not really much ideological daylight between the ones I get along with and the ones I don't, it's almost all personality. There's this one guy who's a really hardcore Trumpista and would probably tread the fumi-e without a care if the daimyō "wasn't PC"; this is someone who seeks me out to complain about "the feminists" to even though he seems to know it bothers me.

Yeah, it's obvious these days that there are many people whose only goal in politics is to stick it to "the other side" - I mean, look at Santander (though it happens on the left as well, of course). Not much point in seeking those out, though it's a shame.

My grandfather has suddenly become ill, and we're afraid that it might be pneumonia. Needless to say, I don't think I'll be posting much for a bit, lest I let my emotions get the best of me.

I'm sorry to hear that. Wish him best.

Had a huge fight today with my sister who, 13 months after I came out, has decided to inform me she'll never accept me as a woman. Because it is going against God and I need to repent. And disagreeing with her is disrespectful because she's entitled to an opinion.

Terrible, terrible day.

Ugh, I'm sorry. That must be awful.

Yesterday I found someone's wallet in the classroom I was teaching in. I'm ashamed to admit that my first reaction was to take the "none of my business" approach and leave it there. In the end, I did take it and emailed the Department to let them know (there was, amazingly, no authority figure physically present on campus at that time), and they've contacted the guy. The fact that the class I was teaching was about ethics probably helped.

My second semester started this week, and one of my new classes is AP Human Geography. The teacher is some ditzy cheerleading coach.

Today, she was showing us a PowerPoint of different "regions" in the United States and which areas they cover, like the Bible Belt in the South and the Corn Belt in the Midwest.

When we got to the Rust Belt, she asked the class if anyone knew how the region got its name. I raised my hand and said "manufacturing and industrial decline," which is the obvious correct answer. She said, "no, it's because it's cold in the north and when snow melts on your car it turns the metal into rust."

Unbelievable.

hahaha that's awesome

...

I must say, as much as I like America I'm glad I got my education in France. Aside from terrible English teachers, I really can't complain.

Don't really want to dampen the mood of this thread, but my grandmother died last Thursday and my whole family is in shock. It really sucks, she was in great health and everything. Cry

I'm so sorry. Been there, and it's awful. Condolences to you and all your family.

I went to a church service for the first time today.

What Church is it? What's your prior background?

Abortion really seems to bring out the very worst in both "sides". At least that only happens in America, though.

Cathcon, I must admit that how you manage to reconcile your personality and general approach to life with your (no doubt sincere and deeply-held) faith is still a mystery to me.

As regards faith, I wouldn't call myself particularly... "faithful". I go attend mass for, shall we say, other reasons. That said, given that most people out there are either (a) unconsciously contradictory or (b) so linear in thinking that their lives conform to only a few principles, I'd have to offer that being consciously contradictory is at least a bit more creative of an approach to life. History shows us that "rational man" does not exist; why pretend?

I for one am certainly not in a position to fault you for being contradictory. Tongue And yeah, most people aren't either, that's a good point.

I guess the real question I had in mind was "if going to Church won't cure you from nihilism, what's even the point?" - which I realize is an incredibly silly question but it relates to other questions I was asking myself since before.
