Yes-for now. I would still listen with open ears during his hearings and examine his record very closely.

Good heavens no!  If I were a Democratic Senator I would never vote yes on any Republican appointee.

Why on earth would one do that?

Justice David Souter
Justice John Paul Stevens
Justice Harry Blackmun
Justice William Brennan
Chief Justice Earl Warren

Without these Republican appointees, where would liberal jurisprudence be today?

I might not like his choices, but I believe a President has a right to his appointees, at LEAST in the cabinet, and also on the supreme court. Whilst I don't like having Presidents, Prime Ministers etc. appointing judges, at least they're not elected.

Same here.  Of course, I haven't had a chance to research him in depth, but what I've heard about him over the past few days, he seems to be quite smart and Constitutionally based.

John Roberts!

Vote to confirm?

Absolutely!

Great Choice!

One might even say inspired choice!

A conservative justice who respects the constitution!

Why should anyone be surprised by this choice?

This is the kind of choice Bush has said he would make since before he was the Republican nominee in 2000!

He will be confirmed!

And there's not a blasted thing

Patrick Leahy
Chuck Schumer
Ted Kennedy

Can do about it!

And they know it!

Kennedy may as well save his feigned indignations and his lying allegations for another day!

I love it!

Opinions, not rulings. He's only been a judge for 2 years.

As I said, there weren't many, since he's only been on the court 2 years.  There was this one.

Joined a unanimous opinion denying the claim of a prisoner who argued that by tightening parole rules in the middle of his sentence, the government subjected him to an unconstitutional after-the-fact punishment. The panel reversed its decision after a Supreme Court ruling directly contradicted it. (Fletcher v. District of Columbia, 2004)

LOL I want to see Dems say something about school busing. Hilarious.

Besides, jfern is apparently too stupid to even understand the role of a lawyer, which is to represent their clients. Roberts was not expressing personal views in any case he argued, though it's likely his personal views were often congruent with the position of the administration.

Roberts is moderate, but nonetheless intelligent and experienced (especially with regard to the Supreme Court). He might literally be the best pick for the job, age considered. He is not the best ideologically, but he's not bad in that regard either.

I think Bush's next selection is likely to be a racial minority or woman (women are actually a majority). It was very smart to avoid making O'Connor's seat a "woman's seat" on the court, as quotas have no place there. After the next retirement, he can pick a woman if he likes without having it appear his hand was forced.

Why are we bringing up busing again? I thought this issue has long been dead? For my stances on busing read George Wallaces' opinion on the matter.

jfern said something about it. Early in his career Roberts represented Reagan's administration on the issue and thus various communist "civil rights" groups will whine a little.

Nice attempt at spinning.  Doesn't help when you quote him though.

nick, I thought we had already established that if rational Democrats such as yourself were running things, Democrats wouldn't lose so often.

Actually, it does look as if that's going to happen...the question is, will it work? After all, I don't think they could just vote yes today if they wanted to...at least not without leaving everybody in the media speculation about it for several weeks. Smiley
