Eisenhower. I will never understand the Jimmy Carter fetishism on this site.

It's not Carter fetishism to say that every President since Carter has been pretty bad.

Carter.

Also:

He was no FDR, I think we can say that much confidently.

In retrospect there's something uniquely pathetic about all of our television-era presidents. Johnson and Eisenhower are probably the last presidents to serve without their chief qualification for national office being their mastery of that medium.

Every president that we've had since then has depended on his talent for doing politics in a time of video-dominated media . Is it a coincidence that no one can get out without becoming either a clown or maniac? (If they weren't one or both in the first place.)

How were Richard "Oh g*&h I lost to JFK, no more debates ever" Nixon, Jimmy "Okay how about yet another attempt at a fireside chat, when they won't even play 'Hail to the Chief' for me anymore" Carter, or "Chicken George" HW Bush really masters of the medium?

But this:

Eisenhower. I will never understand the Jimmy Carter fetishism on this site.

It's not Carter fetishism to say that every President since Carter has been pretty bad.

Exactly.

this is the reason.

Eisenhower. Although worth noting that he is still a failed president, as every single post-Eisenhower POTUS have been.

Eisenhower. I will never understand the Jimmy Carter fetishism on this site.

Exactly.

but Carter was objectively an inept disaster?

That might technically be true (if you insist on particularly uncharitable interpretations of those Presidents' accomplishments), but even then, the only reason Eisenhower didn't "fail" is because he didn't try much of anything. I'd rather have a President who attempts to change society for the better and fails than a do-nothing.

I disagree that Carter was an "inept disaster", but even if that were the case, virtually all of his successors were much worse.

I'm stuck between since Carter and since FDR. Lean since Carter on the basis that I like Carter's foreign policy way more than Obama's.

yes, and it's also worth noting that Eisenhower unleasing the Dulles upon the world may have been the worst foreign policy legacy of any president (given that Bush saw the happy accidental death of Cheney-brand neoconservatism, while the Dulles legacy still lives today), so I don't count Dwight particularly high tbh. Nor do I count Truman very high, for that matter.

Uh, Eisenhower started the largest infrastructure project in the history of the world, and that changed transportation and commerce in the US forever.

ever since the election of Trump my opinion of Obama has gone down, which says quite a bit when I STILL say he's the best President we've had since LBJ.

I voted the best since Lyndon B. Johnson. Both Kennedy and Johnson are about equal with Obama in my judgement. All these three have been fine presidents, slightly better than Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. All of them had different skills and successes as well as flaws.

Ike, but definitely not because he was good.

I suspect JFK will be his most apt comparison - smart, charismatic, intelligent. attractive. A lot of people identified with him and loved him because of that, not seeing that he was pretty ineffective. History will probably be kinder to him than it should be.
