Does Trump lose or win in 2020?  If he's re-elected, he is obviously pretty popular, and I imagine that both Democrats and Republicans will be embracing "populism" for the foreseeable future until something bad happens.  If he loses in 2020, I personally will think it will be backlash from the Rust Belt that does him in (most longtime Republicans clearly didn't desert him simply because he's an obnoxious rube), so I imagine it will be a Democrat that can reclaim that territory who defeats him.  In that case, I think it would depend on how successful the Democrat is.

I'll guess Tea Party type for now.

A lot of these categories overlap.  I like Nate Silver's "five-ring circus" to show how they do.  Essentially, the top row has moderates on the left, which overlap with establishment, which overlaps with social conservatives (but not moderates).  Then, you have Tea Partiers below where the establishment and social conservatives meet (so you can be any combination of those three, including all or none), and you have libertarians just to the left of the Tea Party, overlapping with moderates, the establishment, and the Tea Party, but not social conservatives.  I think the sweet spot is where the social conservatives, Tea Party, and the establishment all overlap.

It depends, how well will Trump handle an economic collapse?

Trump will get the nomination. After 2020 however, it really depends on what the Democrats do.

Probably some far right guy.

But the next GOP President AFTER Trump / Pence will most likely be a pragmatic Clinton-style moderate technocrat from the Northeast who shifts the GOP drastically to the center. (That's my spitballing guess). Of course, this is like 2028/2032 so ...

Libertarian, since an honest and unabashed liberal is like to succeed to Trump.

Although I could see some desperate Movement Conservative try to take on this same Charismatic Lefty...little different from what happened with Mondale.

I agree, which makes Pence a great candidate for 2024.

I think Republicans would be pretty united around Pence.

Maybe it will be Rush Limbaugh. I mean, I'm not even joking. Who else could succeed Trump as Leader of the Great Conservative Backlash ? He only has the name recognition. And this particular brand of Republican won't disappear overnight.

I think it will be Pence, so Option 3, but really an ugly combo of 2, 3, and 4.

I doubt that it will be Pence.  Pence won't be popular with NeverTrumpers and he disagrees with Trump on several key issues and I believe that Trump's base will be looking for someone else.  I just don't see Pence having a devoted group of fanatical supporters like Trump did.

Pence, most likely, will be the next GOP nominee. Probably, President, because I don't think Trump survives 4 years without impeachment, but hey.
