Germany's top court rejects bid to outlaw far-right NPD partyThe Constitutional Court of Germany rejected Tuesday a bid to ban the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD), which has often been accused of being a neo-Nazi party.
The case was brought by lawmakers who called the NPD a threat to the country's democratic system.
Andreas Vosskuhle, the court's president, said that the party's ideology did not merit a ban and that it posed no active threat to democracy, the DPA news agency reported.
The country's constitution says that plaintiffs must prove a party's ideology is "combative and aggressive" and poses an active threat to democracy, the news agency reported.
In 2003, the court rejected another attempt to ban the NPD, because the party was infiltrated by a large number of state informants.
