This month, all states will prepare their election reports for the US Election Assistance Commission.

These reports also include "total ballots cast", which are usually significantly higher than the amount of votes cast just for President.

If all states report their data, total ballots cast will top 139 million votes.

Also, the Census Bureau's latest 2016 estimates have revised down the number of the total US population and 18+ population by about a million, which means turnout is up slightly when compared with earlier estimates.

2016 turnout is now at least 60.2% of voting-eligible persons (citizens 18+).

Good news, but still not very high compared to other western countries. I remember everybody complaing about the German federal election 2009 with a turnout of 70% (in 2013, it was at 71%, which is also projected for 2017).

Both had ~27.4% of the VEP.
