I support the bill. Seems like a sensible extension of our just passed constitutional carry.

With the number of school shootings in the last few years, I can't support a bill that potentially puts more students in a vulnerable situation.

As the sponsor of the bill (not as Speaker), I feel I should clear something up: shootings can happen, and often have happened, with restrictive gun control laws in place. This is about allowing law-abiding people to protect themselves and others.

Newtown and Virginia Tech were both gun free zones.

We should permit students to protect themselves.

As there hasn't been any activity on here in more than a week, I motion for a vote.

I've always been very skeptical of this idea; I can see practically that in certain situations that having a gun on campus could protect you; I've walked through my campus at night (often after one two many drinks) and thought just how isolated you'd be if something happened.

However public policy/safety shouldn't be based on anecdotal views but rather on facts. In the Virginia Tech shooting there was actually a security guard; but as we sadly know this wasn't effective. All the evidence shows that this bill wouldn't protect campuses, despite it's name- See this non partisan report from John Hopkins College

Except that's not what we see. Again - the two worst school shootings, Newtown and Virginia Tech both happened on campuses that had already banned guns.

If you are right that banning guns would lead to more violence why is this? Clearly the opposite is true. Banning guns only keeps them out of the hands of law-abiding folks. It doesn't stop criminals from coming in and massacring the students on campus. All it does is put a massive sign saying, "you can kill people and nobody is going to have a gun to stop you.

There have been instances where having armed students on campus have stopped a killing spree dead in it's tracks.

It looks like there's still some debate left on this bill, so I'll give 24 hours for someone to object before calling a vote or not.

Newtown isn't a university campus so wouldn't be covered by this act, and they had a armed guard at Virginia Tech

Given that I'm a Northern senator and thus my opinion carries no weight in this body, all I would like to say is that I hope the delegates here consider if the exceptionally small likelihood of one being victim to a university shooting justifies the risks in letting potentially inebriated kids brandish guns around college campuses.

I now open a 48-hour vote on this bill.

If gun-free zones really were effective, neither Virginia Tech nor Newtown would have occurred.
