True, Perot led in the polls in early 1992, but I can't picture a map where an independent conceivably reaches 270.

Depends vastly on what kind of independent they are. The only state that I think would be included regardless is Maine.

Those are the forty-four electoral votes I would assume they would win. VT, MA, OR, WA, HI, TX, and DE are other states I think a centrist would do win.

The easiest way for a third party to win would be by effectively replacing one of the major parties a la Colorado Governor 2010 or Kansas Senate 2014, in which case the map wouldn't look much different than normal.

For a contested thee-way race, it depends on the type of Indy. A more libertarian/upscale suburban-appealing candidate might get this map (284 EV):

A more Trump-esque/Perot-esque/downscale-appealing candidate might pull off this map (299 EV):

Kasich/Bloomberg or have a chance map this year, ill give you both

Kasich/Bloomberg  is the third party ticket, and Kasich/Bloomberg get endorsments of Bush, Cruz,Romney,McCain,Rubio,Ryan gop and are able to pick up many independents who went for clinton and also win support of big buisness who went for clinton. Essentially this ticket is tracking at around 15-16% both this time when the trump tape leak they get a surge in support as many republicans would have a non trump option to vote for and then the revelations of the DNC emails may cause many independents  to bolt from clinton and into that ticket. Coupled with strong debate performaces I think they could win a plurality of the electoral college then win in the house.

Kasich 198
Hillary 188
Trump 152

Kasich/Bloomberg get elected in house and senate.

Perot could have won 1992(This map wont have it adjusted for percentages though )

Bill CLinton stumbles badly, isnt able to brush off scandals as well as he did, chose better vp, never dropped out.

he has a path to 270
