Different names were considered by the constitutional committee and they have made a choice.

We should not be forever bound to our prior boringness.

I favor Franklin, as in Benjamin Franklin.

That is the name suggested during the Constitutional Convention.

Jefferson, as in Thomas Jefferson, was the name suggested for the south.  I spoke against using that name as Thomas Jefferson was a major slave holder.  I suggested Rayburn, as in Sam Rayburn, for the south.  That  got some support I believe.

The three suggested names from the convention all make sense.

Fremont, as in John C Fremont, was instrumental in opening up the west.

Franklin, of course Benjamin Franklin, a founding father, from the north, Pennsylvania.

Rayburn, Sam Rayburn, a great legislator from the south, Texas.

Franklin is actually a very good name for the north.

I suggest Franklin. I would suggest Madison, but he was from Virginia.

The list is filling up, so I'll just reiterate my support for Lincoln with Franklin as a close second preference.

I'll extend the time period in which names can be suggested. This thread shall remain open until the end of the month.

Many of the states in the North Region are not near the Atlantic and are in the Midwest.

I hardly think Atlantic is appropriate.

I agree. Nothing based on the Atlantic or the Great Lakes should be considered since they only apply to a portion of the population.

Actually, on the topic of lakes, I would also support the name Erie.

Not all the states in the region are near the Great Lakes, so why should the name of one of the Great Lakes be considered as a serious suggestion?

If you mean Erie, it's not just one of the lakes.  It's also the name of a little canal that connected New York City to the Midwest.  Yes via the Great Lakes.  The canal opened the Midwest to settlers from New York and New England, launched the consumer economy, and made New York City into the commercial capital of the entire country.  I'd even say the canal was important to New Jersey.  Does that leave anyone out?

This is an important point that I often bring up, particular during discussions about the Civil War and the ability of Lincoln to win. The Erie canal shifted economic growth to the Northern parts of ILL, IN, OH and pulling them away from the orbit of New Orleans' trade network along with the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

When it comes to creating the concept of a North Region stretching across the NE and Midwest, nothing is as important to that concept of a block as the Erie Canal and the resulting economic and settlement shifts it led to.

Some years ago I used to live near the an abandoned portion of the canal system in upstate NY.

Bump!

I'm not quite sure when the Governor would like this thread to be closed officially, but I'm aiming to end the submission period on January 31st at 11:59 PM EST. After that, the Assembly will choose our three favorite name suggestions and you all will be able to vote on them in February! So get those submissions in!

On behalf of former Sawx, the former Governor of the Northeast region, I would like to submit the name Sawxistan.
