Well, Trump was able to retain long-standing GOP supremacy in the county, albeit very narrowly( I think even Dole in '96 did better, am I wrong?), but Arpaio( closely associated to him) lost in a landslide...needless to say that with the sheriff race numbers transposed to the presidential one, Arizona would have been in the Democratic column very safely...so, why voting for Trump and against his "surrogate" Arpaio?

Because Penzone is not Clinton and it was for Sheriff not for President or Congress. Also, Arpiaio was the incumbent, so kicking him out fit quite well with Trump's whole "Drain the Swamp" line.

Someone who viewed both Clinton and Arpaio as corrupt, and Trump/Penzone as reformers.

I am actually on a forum with quite a few of these type of voters, and they say they view Arpaio as a joke and that he isn't as anti-illegal as people say. Let's face it, the vast majority of Arizonans voted for Trump as a vote against amnesty.

Although to me (a Californian) he does seem tough. Also they view him as corrupt and doesn't get anything done.

I'll ask later.

Also, I bet most Johnson and Stein voters in a place like Maricopa County voted for Penzone.

Because they don't like laws.

Suburban Republican voters who didn't like either Trump or Arpaio, but could deal with Trump because they hated Clinton more. They couldn't deal w/ Arpaio anymore because hes' been there forever.

Because they don't like lawsfascism.

FTFY (well, Stein voters are probably okay with it, but won't admit it to themselves)
