Republicans introduce tough immigration bill

By Alan Elsner
Tue Jul 19, 4:37 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - All of the estimated 10 million to 12 million illegal aliens in the United States would have to leave the country under an immigration bill introduced on Tuesday by two conservative Republican senators.

The bill by Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl and Texas Sen. John Cornyn is a tougher alternative to a rival bipartisan bill introduced two month ago that would allow some illegals to get jobs legally and eventually gain citizenship without leaving the country.

The Kyl-Cornyn bill calls for the creation of a machine-readable, tamper-proof Social Security card that would be issued to every American in the workforce to prevent illegals from getting jobs.

It would also fund the hiring of 10,000 new Department of Homeland Security personnel dedicated to weeding illegal immigrants out of the workforce and an additional 1,000 for detecting immigration fraud.

Companies that hired illegal immigrants would face tough fines.

Additionally, the bill would authorize the recruitment of 10,000 new Border Patrol agents over five years and a $2.5 billion investment in unmanned aerial vehicles, cameras, barriers and sensors along the Mexican border.

The senators did not give a total cost for the bill but a fact sheet distributed with their proposal contained partial costs of well over $12 billion.

Am I the only one who feels that those billions of dollars would be better spent on the National Science Foundation to help make Americans more competitive globally and to prepare us for the future, rather than chasing the White Rabbit of the past?

You do realize many criminals come across the boarder and there are major problems with smugglers and people who attempt to steal their human "cargo".

No matter how you cut it there are problems with our boarder. Of course, I don't think throwing money at the problem is a good solution to the problem
So we waste $12 billion dollars to punish the orchard for a few bad apples?

Immigration is definitely a problem, but I'm not so sure this is the solution.

I like all of this bill except for the Social Security card part.

We need to be very tough on illegal immigration.

Of course illegal aliens should be punished. However, more aliens should be allowed into the country in the first place, so as to furnish a sufficient supply of lower-cost labor to employers who desire it.

Yes, combine this with the guest worker program, and you have a great system.

Canada is less poor than Mexico, so I don't think they cross the borders as much. But I agree that Canadian border security also needs to be beefed up.

Closing the border and placing willing citizen volunteers on it as guards solves it without a 12 billion dollar price tag.

It looks like we have found something else to agree on.

What's wrong? Hmmm.... Maybe trying to stop people who truly want to become Americans from becoming one because you are afraid of them taking your job. And I'm not being politically correct, I am sympathizing with Mexicans who wish to escape poor economic conditions.

They can come the way that my ancestors and the ancestors of most Americans came. That is, legally. They can have all the jobs they want if they come here legally, learn the language, and try to become Americans. If they hop the border, get paid under the table, and form violent street gangs, they deserve deportation.

I'm not worried about some illegal "stealing" my job. I am concerned for my as well as my family's safety. Many illegals who come here do so because they have lengthy criminal records or have criminal tendencies and they wouldn't be allowed in the country if they went through the normal legal means. I know what the situation is as I live in one of the worst areas for that crap. Their are probably quite a few illegals living in this very neighborhood where I'm at. Luckily for you such issues aren't your concern in PA.

I've been telling people about this for months.

The interesting thing will be to see if Frist tries to bury the bill, or perhaps delay it.

This can be a killer for those who end up voting against it.

Its long past time to hold elected officials feet to the fire on this one.

Needless to say, I have the highest respect for Senator Kyl.
