Texas and Alabama use partisan elections. Is that even worse than using nonpartisan elections?

Let's not pretend that candidates in "nonpartisan" elections are actually independent of the party machines. The only tangible difference between the two is that, in partisan elections, the candidate's affiliation is listed clearly on the ballot, whereas in nonpartisan elections it is a poorly-kept secret.

The problem is the elections themselves.

The problem is the elections themselves.

There is no such thing as an unelected judge. The only question is whether campaigning is open and directed towards the people or if it is in private to unelected cronies of the governor.

The governor who was elected to... oh that's right, govern.

I think they should be nominated by the governor for 12 or 14 years and get confirmation from the legislature.

stunningly, there are other ways to do things that the way that things are done in the US.  In the UK we have independent boards that appoint judges; the minister in charge (I think its the Justice Minister in Scotland and NI and the Lord Chancellor in England) has limited powers to reject appointments but they can only do so a certain number of times before they have to "recommend" one of the boards names to the Prime Minister or First Minister who legally must submit their name to the Queen.  Its not a perfect system but its a hell of a lot better than politicising these things...
