During an interview with ABC’s David Muir which is set to air during Wednesday’s edition of ABC World News, the President and the anchor got into a testy back-and-forth over Trump’s citation of a Pew report on voter fraud.

    What you have presented so far has been debunked. It’s been called false —

    I called the author of the Pew report last night. He told me they found no evidence of voter fraud.

He knows that all these allegations that millions voted illegally are fake; but he just doesn’t care. And he doesn’t care that this further divides the country. He also knows that most of his supporters believe his claims, no matter what nonsense he’s coming up with. Does this contempt of truth qualify as mental illness? Is mental illness the sort of permanent  disability that would trigger the provisions of the 25th Amendment?

Gross incompetence or inadequacy has never been a ground for the removal of a President, Cabinet secretary, or Federal judge. What has mattered has been typically an incapacitating stroke, heart attack, or other undeniable end to the capacity of the President (in this case) to be able to communicate. Even for temporary debility, one would need a voluntary statement or so blatant reality as a coma. Impeachment seems limited largely to criminal misconduct or failure to discharge the duties.

It is unlikely that a President would ever submit to a mental evaluation.
