Red are states that have been a deliberate destination. Green are states I've simply travelled through. Yellow are one-night overnight stays en-route to somewhere else.

Places I remember being.  I just noticed I don't think I've been in a state with North, South, or West as part of the name.  And the only "New" state I've been to is New Mexico.

2001 - Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania

2011 - Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York

I was a guest of Marcos Ambrose who won the Watkins Glen 2011 Sprint Cup race.

We are both from the same town in Australia.

I'm an old, who has got around, so I have been to DC and all US states except North Dakota, West Virginia and Alaska, and a US territory. Dan and  I will be going to Dan's hood of US Samoa this summer (before my anticipated campaign for office in Hudson heats up), so that box should be checked then.

I keep my map updated in the gallery for the many threads like this. The key is red for residences, dark blue for overnight stay, light blue for intentional destinations, and green for drive through (including gas and meal stops).

I'm shocked that you have never been to two counties in Illinois. When are you going to remedy that?

The southernmost one he hasn't been to is just north of the Shawnee National Forest, and, well, there ain't much there!

Every state, with the exceptions of Alaska, Hawaii, and Florida (Huh)

Been to the district but no territories (VA, American Samoa, etc...) or "Occupied Nations" (Puerto Rico)....

Edit: None of the (47) states have been based upon airplane layovers....

Way too many cross-country road trips over the decades back and forth, from when I was a relatively young child to the present day....

You're so close to visiting all 50 states that you should probably make an effort to go to the other three.  West Virginia should be an easy trip for you now that you're living on the East Coast.  It's easily driveable from Hudson - well, at least the Eastern Panhandle is.  Harpers Ferry is in the Eastern Panhandle, if you're into history.  And there is some outdoorsy stuff to do in the rest of the state, if you're not.  I can see why you and most people never visited North Dakota (it's out of the way from practically anywhere and off the beaten tourist track), but it has Theodore Roosevelt National Park and some small cities like Fargo.  Alaska is pretty far from you now compared to back when you were living in California, but if you're willing to go all the way to American Samoa, getting to Alaska should be a breeze.

American Samoa should be interesting.  If you take a very short flight over to the independent nation of Samoa from there, you'd lose a day going there and go back in time coming back, as, unlike American Samoa, it is on the other side of the International Date Line.

Yes, it will be done. Dan likes independent Somoa much better than American Somoa (among other thinks the population is far more fit, because they eat much less in the way of junk food), and it's far more scenic. That is where he has spent most of his time. His ancestors lived on a remote island in American Somoa, and basically at one time basically ran the island, with his grandfather a fire and brimstone Congregationalist minister who terrified Dan as a little kid when he had to attend the sermons. His grand aunt hosted Margaret Mead for a month or so in her home when she began her research (its architecture, just like the local church, had a New England feel to it mixed in), but she moved out because she thought the rent was too high. Dan was interviewed here in Hudson for Belgium television about his family's Mead connection among other stuff, in case anyone is interested. It's the video that took place at the Second Ward Foundation, right down the block from us, if you scroll down.

I'm shocked that you have never been to two counties in Illinois. When are you going to remedy that?

The southernmost one he hasn't been to is just north of the Shawnee National Forest, and, well, there ain't much there!

I picked up 6 IL counties last year based largely on two trips to Carbondale and Paducah that took me into the Shawnee National Forest. It's quite lovely and worth spending time in.

I picked up Calhoun earlier this month. It's at the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers and lacks many attractions. I went to St Louis for the NHL winter classic and my family agreed to take the scenic route home. We went up to Alton then along the Mississippi to take the ferry over the Illinois at Brussels putting us in Calhoun. It added two hours to our drive home. That leaves just Hamilton and Richland as shown on the map.

That's always the challenge with these out-of-the-way counties. There's a trade off in extra time, and how much I can afford. An example is Mineral county NV. I was just in Mesquite this month and took an overnight in Death Valley (hello Inyo CA by way of Nye NV). We could have taken the 3 1/2 hour drive straight back, but we wanted to see the ghost town of Rhyolite and the A'Le Inn on the Extraterrestrial Highway. That's a 7 hour drive and would take me through Esmeralda and Lincoln counties. The side trip over to Mineral would add another hour and a half, and we didn't want be driving that much just for one more county.
