That man was the definitive Caligula for me (along with other magnificent roles like Winston Smith). Such a brilliant actor.

He was great in The Elephant Man, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and I, Claudius (apparently some folks feel it is too hammy a performance, but come on; he gave a great performance and was extremely entertaining).  While his best performance was probably in Nineteen Eighty-Four or The Elephant Man (I'm inclined to say it was the latter, but it has been a while since I saw Nineteen Eighty-Four and I remember thinking he gave a terrific performance there), I agree that he is the definitive movie/TV Caligula and his performance in I, Claudius probably did quite a bit to make Caligula's name synonymous with "batsh!t insane, tyrannical monarch/emperor" in the mind of the general public.

Hurt's performance in Alien was hardly his best (although he certainly did the most that could be done with the role he had), but it gave him one of the most memorable scenes he's ever had; you really can't look back on his career without mentioning that movie imo.  Apparently he got an Oscar nomination for Midnight Express, but the less said about that movie the better.

One of those actors with a larger-than-life presence, making any movie he was in at least interesting or close to it.

Even the last Indiana Jones?

Anyway, I'm sorry to see that the great Aragorn has fallen.

ASH
Kane's son.

I'll always remember him for that truly great movie, which gets better with every year. Retro Best Picture 1979. Wink

Caligula, Hazel, Winston Smith, Adam Sutler, The Horned King, Warren Christopher, Timothy Evans... he wasn't just playing them, he was them as long as he acted.

It is a great tragedy that he never played Vaclav Havel.

Anyway, in other sad acting related news Emmanuelle Riva has died as well.

It was well known that Hurt was very, very ill so that he managed to beat 2016 was the real surprise.

As this clip demonstrates, the greater tragedy is that he never returned to become King Elessar.

But the greatest tragedy is that he played one of the worst Disney villains.
