Option 1 when writing in print, option 2 when writing in cursive (which I still do most of the time).

Other than my signature, I haven't used cursive since I was in college in the 1970's. I found that when I lectured printing was much easier for my students to read than cursive. They don't teach cursive in the local schools anymore. That ended about a decade ago.

My cursive is absolutely illegible to anyone but myself, but that's how I learned to write and it still comes naturally (and faster) to me. When I need to be understood (like when I'm filling out forms and such) I write in print.

My cursive is actually fairly good - my mom signed me up for a calligraphy class as a kid because of my atrocious handwriting and it worked as intended - so I most often use cursive. When I want to be indisputably legible I do like muon and ᴜsᴇ sᴍᴀʟʟᴄᴀᴘs ғᴏʀ ᴛʜɪɴɢs ʟɪᴋᴇ ᴀᴅᴅʀᴇssɪɴɢ ᴇɴᴠᴇʟᴏᴘᴇs.

What an intriguing series of polls lately.  At least now we're asking the important questions.

I voted for the second option as it comes closer to the way I draw the letter a, although mine has a little tail at the bottom right.  Something like the figure on the lower left:

I often write it the same as an uppercase A but smaller. Using all upper case but changing character height to distinguish upper from lower case can make my writing easier to read.

I'm the same. I write in all-caps, but change size to denote capitalization. I'm quite fond of my penmanship in all-caps when I write in pencil (not as much in pen though).

What? Huh That's so weird.

... I didn't think so. It's just like muon said. What would normally be capitalized is just made larger to distinguish upper case from lower case. I suppose  these topics would be better if they asked for visual examples of handwriting.

You mean your lowercase a is still written like A but smaller? I don't remember ever seeing a writing like that.

There are a number of fonts that provide small caps for lower case letters, too.

I have a professor who does that. It became weird for me when he wrote "R/K" on the board and I interjected that it was really "r/K". He, of course, pointed out that every single letter had been capitalized regardless of how it might appear typed.

This is going to sound quite strange but I have an absolute hatred for this form of writing the letter "a". I try and avoid it as much as possible and have spent many years (I'm serious) trying to find a professional looking font that doesn't use this "a". This is a completely unnatural form of writing and it is a shame it is used in so many great fonts.

I am honestly being completely serious about this.

FTFY  There is the Latin letter alpha which I replaced almost all the a's in the above, but I don't care for it in type as it typically is hard to distinguish an "ɑ" from an "o".
