I use the line, so it is less easily confused with 1. I also write z with a line for a similar reason.

I have occasionally, though I almost always write z's with a line, which is essential when writing proofs for my matrix theory class, lest I mix them up with a 2.

I know a few students who do that.  They do it with the letter Z as well.  I think they must have picked it up somewhere but I don't give them a hard time over it.

I write my 7 like I write my Z, just like this:  7 and Z.  Like a gringo, not like a nazi.

I also write the number 2 like this:  2.

But I write the number 9 like a backward P.

What about the number 2 (loop or no loop)?  What about 8 (one continuous line or two circles)?

7, Z, and upper-case J with lines; 0 with no line but narrower than O
2 with loop
8 in one continuous stroke
Open-topped 4

Hell yes with the line for the lucky number and "Z". Anything else is so uncouth.

Open topped "4"

"0" is often just "O"

"8" is one continuous line that appears to be two triangles.

No squiggle for "2"

Backwards uppercase "E" for 3

Generally without a line.  (American)

If I'm writing something alphanumeric, such as my car's VIN number, I'll lightly add the horizontal line to the 7, a vertical line to the 0, etc., to distinguish it from any similar letters.
