Opinion of getting woke?

Recently I have had a lot of people telling me about the virtues of getting woke, and I'm concerned about this activity.

I subscribe to neither (I vociferously hate the alt-right, obviously) but the idea of being "woke" is ... just overly complicated and needless. I also don't subscribe to some of the SJW traditions, on say, abortion, for example. 

It's much simpler to call yourself aware or engaged. Or to situate certain issues within a broader economic or social context. I don't necessarily, for example, buy into BLM; I buy into All Lives Matter and the idea of protecting all civilians from police brutality, for example.

It's a framing issue, not an actual disagreement with the concept of being civil libertarian minded, which is what I assume being "woke" is about.

it's all very confusing to me

am I supposed to be "woke" or is that a bad thing to be "woke"....does somebody "woke" me or is it something I can do alone?  Can people tell once you been "woke"d?  Does the voice change?  Do you get taller?  Does it have something to do with "privilege"?  Can you buy a "woke" kit at Starbucks?  Was the sucker puncher "woke" or is it the sucker punchee?


I think I saw people making fun of it before I saw it used by the asshole types that created it and it's really confused me.

According to urbandictionary.com it means "Knowing whats going on in the community."  I suppose it means aware or sensitive to social injustice.  Why not just say aware? 

I think it must not be a popular expression at the meetings I attend because I don't remember seeing it till this thread.  Voted for "please make people stop saying this" anyway.

My Government professor told the class to "stay woke" (he also said he didn't know what it meant) at the end of class on Friday, so at least someone at Millersville knows about it.

     That makes me wince. I'd respect them more if they'd argue for their preferred definition rather than just pretend that it is the only definition.

Getting woke is like when there is a massive political disaster going on with refugees resulting in major protests... while the administration reshuffles the national security council to do away with expertise and replace it with impotent power and rage...

And everyone on IRC is busy literally talking to nobody (as in several people are having unreciprocated conversations) about their grandpa's political evolution or the Green Party candidate for president in 2004.

And then you realize this isn't just an IRC thing.. this is most people everywhere.  And alarms start going off.
And then you start to even realize that the people screaming "get woke" aren't even woke themselves.  Even the most slumbering of souls can answer a question in their half state of sleep.  They can even repeat "get woke" and then stay asleep and just implement "wokeness" into their dreams.

Getting woke is like when you wake up from a dream into a dream... and then finally you actually wake up.  And while waking up into the dream seemed real... you just "knew" when you actually woke up.
