No, although I'm obviously a huge fan of the founder of straight edge, Ian MacKaye.

Come to think of it, I just realized that a Catholic version of me would've have to have left the church in the last few years. I have basically zero tolerance for promotion of views and ideology that contradicts my own, so in order to be a Catholic, I'd have to be an actual social conservative and adhere to the church teachings on sexuality. But this means then that I'd be "all conservative all the time" and would get really angry at some of the stuff Francis has said, so I'd basically say "F[inks] this Pope, I'm out" and leave since I also can't tolerate having a leader I'm not in complete lockstep with. I'd probably become a conservative Anglican or something. Although good chance I'd come back if the next Pope is more conservative.

I'd also still refuse to recognize "cultural Catholicism" as valid and would frequently scream about "fake Catholics" and the like.

Not being able to tolerate having a leader you're not in complete lockstep with is really not very liberal at all.

I thought it was pretty obvious that "all liberal all the time" is really more along the lines of "all center-left, all the time"

Although I'd argue that is in fact a VERY common trait amongst American liberals. I mean, are Lena Dunham and Seth MacFarlane tolerant of people in power with whom they have disagreements with? In fact if anything I am more pragmatic than most in that regard, see a certain I-CA avatar in comparison to me for accepting Democratic candidates for example.

BCTD in early 2009:

"Topic: What states would you be willing to live in?"

*map of all states shaded blue where McCain won Catholics per the exit poll*

"That's it. I would never EVER live in a state full of fake Catholics that voted for Obama. In fact I've decided I can't even attend mass anymore in counties that voted for Obama, might have some of those horrible fake Catholics also tainting it. I'm going to have to start going to mass in Anoka County, it's a bit further drive out the way, but at least it's REAL Catholics there. Also I will never buy a rosary made while Obama is in office."

(Incidentally this would NOT exclude me from living in Minnesota, as exit polls showed that McCain did in fact win Catholics in Minnesota.)

Actually I'd probably already live in Anoka County. I'd refuse to live in Hennepin County because I'd refuse to live in any county that had a Planned Parenthood in it.

Oh, also, you wouldn't become a conservative Anglican, you'd become a sedevacantist.

I don't see how even a Catholic version of me, with the rest of quirks intact, would be able to tolerate a Latin Mass or consider it the only valid mass.

You can't be a True CatholicTM if you don't like the Latin mass. That's like Catholic Hipster 101 right there. Next step would be the Divine Liturgy and a strange fondness for iconostases, then it's a slippery slope down to the pining for the Mozarabic Rite, Maronite propagating signs of peace, and speaking Aramaic on the plains of Nineveh.

I like the Divine Liturgy and iconostases but get a "kings built tombs more splendid than the houses of the living and counted the names of their descent dearer than the names of their sons" vibe from the Latin Mass (although gun to my head I do prefer it to the handholding-and-Haugen style of liturgy). Have I skipped a step?

The reason I don't think I'd like Latin Mass is that I tend to dislike anything "traditional*" and am all so for "modernism" and the like. Which is part of why it'd be tough to imagine me as Catholic in the first place, but it's conceivable that a more conservative version of me would be into Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

*With the exception of my music, although being a bit of a traditional purist for an offshoot of an offshoot of an offshoot of punk is kind of like being on the conservative wing of a communist party.

I'd probably make stuff like this:

(The one thing I found on r/catholicmemes that actually made me laugh. Actually took me awhile to get obviously.)

FWIW, r/izlam (Islam memes) is pretty good (when I get it, which is only about half the time), and r/dankchristianmemes is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

I think the rise of Beto and AOC might necessitate BRTD walking back some of his comments in this thread.

In Chicago, our catholic BRTD would probably be priest Michael Louis Pfleger. He’s got a hipster Christian outlook, he’s politically active, and he is a character in these parts.

Wow, what an FF. I might still go to church if this guy were a priest here.

LOL this was a fun thread actually.

His name is Rod Dreher, he writes for the American Conservative, and he had a book coming out soon. (I know that Dreher is Orthodox, not Catholic, but a Catholic BRTD would convert to Orthodox Christianity too.)

You know I thought that originally, but I actually think now even more likely is that I'd convert to one of those non-Roman Catholic churches that are still in communion with the Catholic church, like the Maronites or whatever. Even if I did convert to Orthodox it'd almost certainly be like some small Middle Eastern branch instead of Greek or a "mainstream" one.
