I highly doubt I'd quote "My King is alive!" since it's from a song by a Christian hardcore band that is like basically all Christian hardcore bands, very Protestant.

(Ironically my absolute favorite one is the only one I've ever found with any type of Catholic influence at all, making some references to saints and in one song mentioning a rosary. The members however are all not Catholic.)

Of course all this assumes that BRTD would indeed be an ALATT Hipster Catholic, which isn't necessarily true at all.

Seeing as how hipster Catholics don't exist and you can't be Catholic and ALATT...

Sort of like a straight realisticidealist I guess?

you mean straight edge?  I don't think BRTD would ever be that.

No, although I'm obviously a huge fan of the founder of straight edge, Ian MacKaye.

Come to think of it, I just realized that a Catholic version of me would've have to have left the church in the last few years. I have basically zero tolerance for promotion of views and ideology that contradicts my own, so in order to be a Catholic, I'd have to be an actual social conservative and adhere to the church teachings on sexuality. But this means then that I'd be "all conservative all the time" and would get really angry at some of the stuff Francis has said, so I'd basically say "F[inks] this Pope, I'm out" and leave since I also can't tolerate having a leader I'm not in complete lockstep with. I'd probably become a conservative Anglican or something. Although good chance I'd come back if the next Pope is more conservative.

I'd also still refuse to recognize "cultural Catholicism" as valid and would frequently scream about "fake Catholics" and the like.

Not being able to tolerate having a leader you're not in complete lockstep with is really not very liberal at all.

I thought it was pretty obvious that "all liberal all the time" is really more along the lines of "all center-left, all the time"

Although I'd argue that is in fact a VERY common trait amongst American liberals. I mean, are Lena Dunham and Seth MacFarlane tolerant of people in power with whom they have disagreements with? In fact if anything I am more pragmatic than most in that regard, see a certain I-CA avatar in comparison to me for accepting Democratic candidates for example.

BCTD in early 2009:

"Topic: What states would you be willing to live in?"

*map of all states shaded blue where McCain won Catholics per the exit poll*

"That's it. I would never EVER live in a state full of fake Catholics that voted for Obama. In fact I've decided I can't even attend mass anymore in counties that voted for Obama, might have some of those horrible fake Catholics also tainting it. I'm going to have to start going to mass in Anoka County, it's a bit further drive out the way, but at least it's REAL Catholics there. Also I will never buy a rosary made while Obama is in office."

(Incidentally this would NOT exclude me from living in Minnesota, as exit polls showed that McCain did in fact win Catholics in Minnesota.)

Actually I'd probably already live in Anoka County. I'd refuse to live in Hennepin County because I'd refuse to live in any county that had a Planned Parenthood in it.

Oh, also, you wouldn't become a conservative Anglican, you'd become a sedevacantist.

I don't see how even a Catholic version of me, with the rest of quirks intact, would be able to tolerate a Latin Mass or consider it the only valid mass.

The reason I don't think I'd like Latin Mass is that I tend to dislike anything "traditional*" and am all so for "modernism" and the like. Which is part of why it'd be tough to imagine me as Catholic in the first place, but it's conceivable that a more conservative version of me would be into Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

*With the exception of my music, although being a bit of a traditional purist for an offshoot of an offshoot of an offshoot of punk is kind of like being on the conservative wing of a communist party.

I'd probably make stuff like this:

(The one thing I found on r/catholicmemes that actually made me laugh. Actually took me awhile to get obviously.)

FWIW, r/izlam (Islam memes) is pretty good (when I get it, which is only about half the time), and r/dankchristianmemes is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

LOL this was a fun thread actually.

His name is Rod Dreher, he writes for the American Conservative, and he had a book coming out soon. (I know that Dreher is Orthodox, not Catholic, but a Catholic BRTD would convert to Orthodox Christianity too.)

You know I thought that originally, but I actually think now even more likely is that I'd convert to one of those non-Roman Catholic churches that are still in communion with the Catholic church, like the Maronites or whatever. Even if I did convert to Orthodox it'd almost certainly be like some small Middle Eastern branch instead of Greek or a "mainstream" one.

Eastern Catholicism is just about hipster enough for you, yeah! And the liturgies are different enough from what Latin Catholics and magisterial Protestants are used to that even the real you would probably experience them as cool cultural expressions rather than boring ritualism.

Of course it is (rather ironically) significantly more difficult for a Roman Catholic to convert to Eastern Catholicism than a non-Catholic, and even non-Christians.

Granted it's also hard to see the Catholic version of myself caring about such rules and would probably just start attending Mass at such a church and taking communion anyway.

(Just ran across this thread again)

In Chicago, our catholic BRTD would probably be priest Michael Louis Pfleger. He’s got a hipster Christian outlook, he’s politically active, and he is a character in these parts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Pfleger
Wow, what an FF. I might still go to church if this guy were a priest here.
I have to say, this guy actually does not sound like my type, even if we ignore the sexual abuse allegations and assume they're false and the investigation's conclusion was correct. For example:
Quote
Under Pfleger's leadership, the community of St. Sabina demanded the shutdown of a number of Auburn Gresham businesses specializing in drug paraphernalia. His parish also campaigned for the removal of tobacco and alcohol billboards from their neighborhood. When billboard owners refused to cooperate in the early 1990s, he and others decided to climb ladders and deface the signs. He was charged with destruction of private property, but was acquitted by a jury in 1991.

Anti-drug paraphernalia sales would hurt my record stores, and I imagine today that would apply to those THC products I was a big fan of but as I noted to Dule haven't used in quite awhile...but still make big bucks for record stores. And anti-alcohol advertising, we've been over this.

(Honestly I do think billboards are trashy and ugly in general and wouldn't mind a law ala Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Vermont that just bans them entirely, but banning just alcohol ones would be completely unfair.)

Also his criticism of Jerry Springer and Howard Stern...both are/were liberal Democrats! Springer even was a Democratic mayor of Cincinnati.

I'll give him credit for this though, it was definitely awesome!

Quote
In 2007, Pfleger and his Saint Sabina parishioners erected twenty billboards across Chicago with the words "Stop Listening To Trash", followed by a list of "disrespectful rappers", which included Fat Joe, Lil Wayne, Nelly, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Twista, Snoop Dogg and Ludacris.

Would you ever buy a car built between 2005 and 2013?
« on: August 8, 2023, 8:30:25 pm »

Absolutely not! No way would I ever wanted to be reminded of that creep Benedict XVI and the time he was Pope every time I drive my car!

I had a good deal offered on a model 2006 car a couple years ago but I had to decline. Now I'm looking for a new car and though there are some good cheap deals available most are older than 2014....I need to buy a 2014 model or later even if I have to pay more just so I can have a Francis car!
