LIVE NOW: George W. Bush Announces Running Mate

"... That's why I am proud to announce a man who has served his country in so many ways, who I am thrilled to have next to me in the next 4 years! The next Vice-President of the United States, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, COLIN POWELL!"

"Thank you Governor Bush. I have to admit, when I was first asked about running, I was very skeptical. But after talking to Governor Bush and hearing his plans for this country, and my direct role in foreign policy in his administration, I couldn't help but say yes. We are in a very turbulent time in the world right now, and we need capable hands guiding the future of this country in world affairs. Everything I have seen from the other side lacks that care. No more nation building, lets focus on the security of this country, and helping others when asked. Together our nation will prosper here at home, and our position abroad will be as a helping hand, not a boot.

Vice-Presidential Debate

"Good evening, sparks flew tonight at the Vice-Presidential debate between Colin Powell and Senator Lieberman, as Powell went on the attack. Powell accused Gore and Lieberman of dangerous foreign policy, even more dangerous than the approach of Bill Clinton. Driving home the point that Gore and Lieberman were hawks, and even accused them of betraying the trust of the American people."

November 7th, 2000
BUSH/POWELL ELECTED IN ELECTORAL LANDSLIDE, CLOSE POPULAR VOTE

Gov. George W. Bush (R-TX)/Colin Powell (R-NY) 314EV 48.6%
VP. Al Gore (D-TN)/Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) 224EV 47.1%
Ralph Nader (G-CT)/Winona LaDuke (D-MN) 0EV 4.3%

Which US Senate seat did the Dems lose in this TL ? I know Robb went down in VA in real life.

Nebraska, Stenberg won instead of Nelson. I figured since it was a really close race (51%-49%), a close GOP in a favorable enviroment made sense.

I wonder what the exit polls were like ? I'm assuming Powell as VP made some strong showing among minorities: possibly double digits among African Americans ?

Evidently Bob Franks also picked up the open seat in New Jersey Smiley

Correct, which is why Bush didn't appoint him Attorney General.
