He's been saying stuff like this for months. Trump really does believe America isn't great or exceptional -but that under his leadership, it can be made so. I think he's right.

I mean, he's right that our country isn't "innocent", but that doesn't justify respecting a tyrant like Putin.

All of Trump's damage during these last 2 weeks have been self inflicted. He just continues to say and do stupid stuff. He'll be in the 30s favorbility wise by the middle of the year and its all his fault because he keeps saying stupid sh**t like this.

-There's a difference between pride in your country and thinking it great and exceptional.

No, I don't think that's quite right.  Trump simply doesn't believe "greatness" has anything to do with one's values.  He never talks about America's values, but about prosperity, security, military prowess, etc.  He thinks we should love the country because it's our country, not because of any high-minded values:

Trump is half-right. We've done a LOT of nasty s***, especially during the Cold War.

Still don't believe in gushing over Putin, tho.

Wonderful. I support Trump because of his admiration and respect for President Putin, who is a great leader.

Just imagine this exchange in 1973:

From CBS News -- Walter Cronkite's Super Bowl interview with President McGovern

Walter Cronkite: Do you respect Leonid Brezhnev?

George McGovern: I respect him, but --

Walter Cronkite: Do you? Why?

McGovern: Well, I respect a lot of people, but that does not mean I'm going to get along with him.* He's a leader of his country. I say it's better to get along with the Soviet Union than not. And if the Soviet Union helps us get a negotiated settlement in Vietnam, which is a reasonable objective, that's a good thing. Will I get along with him? I have no idea.

Cronkite: But he's a killer. Brezhnev is a killer.

McGovern: There are a lot of killers. We've got a lot of killers. What do you think -- our country's not so innocent?

*Not that George McGovern would have ever made that grammatical error.

Any questions?

-Sure, they were great. But that was ages ago, and they were pretty much the opposite of Barack Obama's Democratic Party (see county maps of White vote). The Dems have changed too much since the great Age of Jackson for me to ID as one of them.

Tell that to gay Russians and anyone who opposes him. Really, how can you admire such a disgusting authoritarian being?

-They're better off than in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan, that's for sure. And traditional values are not a bad thing.

Can you imagine the primal screams of rage had a Democratic President (Obama, or Hillary) said this, or anything like it?

It will be amazing if Republicans pick up this line and quit with the exceptionalism... like, this is the stuff of the truly radical far-left.

So a US President is actually using the "and you are lynching negroes" fallacy...against the US. Amazing.
