Well, our hands aren't clean in many ways, that is true... but is it appropriate for the President of the United States to be diminishing America like this in the defense of Russia? America may have its own issues but I think there is a laundry of countries who are worse - sometimes far worse. Also may be worth noting that Trump himself seems to support some of the things that have left a stain on our country, such as torture and black sites, no?

This is hilarious because he's also staining our reputation, making the US even more imperfect.

Yes, which is another reason why we're not so innocent, and I agree he should shut up a bit, to be sure, but that's just not going to happen, sadly.

In other words, I agree with him but STFU about it.

The black sites and Abu Ghraib are blots on our history. We can own up to them. We must not excuse others for such.

I'm glad he's honest about it. I'm sad that it takes someone like this to be honest about it.

Since some of you don’t seem to have grappled with the points I’ve made in this thread, I encourage you to read this Peter Beinart column, which explains my point of view on this more clearly than anything I could have written:

“For Trump, 'We Have a Lot of Killers' Isn't a Criticism”

Ron Paul was just as wrong as Trump. Also, Ron Paul isn't President.

I'm not a Russophobe and I think defending Putin is a problem, because I'm not fond of authoritarian rulers who rig elections and kill dissidents.

-Both unsubstantiated charges. Yes; there is still non-negligible voter fraud in Russia (especially in the southerly regions), but it's not what keeps United Russia in power.

Have you ever heard of a libertarian Russian ruler?

I don't think I've ever expressed a desire for "libertarian" rulers.

Donald J. Trump‏ @realDonaldTrump
I don't know Putin, have no deals in Russia, and the haters are going crazy - yet Obama can make a deal with Iran, #1 in terror, no problem!

Trump is unamerican in every sense of the word, but that isn't new. The guy wishes the US was less American and more Russian and has made clear that is his goal.

Many who respect Russian culture (really, it is incredibly rich) can find Russia's politics appalling. Donald Trump is unpopular worldwide, but does anyone expect that to erode the appreciation that non-Americans have for American cinema and pop music? Not likely.

My relatives in Russia would like to hear of one, certainly.
