He's not considered a "contender".  He's considered a possible candidate.  You can run for president even if you have little to no chance of winning.

In Kander's case, people think he might be interested because he visited Iowa in December.

I don't think he's a 2020 contender, but he's obviously someone who'll very obviously be a contender sometime down the road, either through being elected Governor of Missouri in 2020, or through an eventual Democratic Cabinet appointment.

Why was the current President considered, he had no experience of any kind?

If anything, the outsider tag is an ASSET even more than it used to be, and with the bench so thin atm anyway, this would be a good way to jump cut the whole thing.

Other good reasons:

- Youth (Usually they tend to be the ones that win among Democrats)

- Charisma

- Troll deflection

- Absurdly good performance considering the odds.

- Atlas Blue state origin (Just as Trump being from NY was probably a big reason he got so far)


Not that I think he'll actually go for it so early in his career.

^^ That, and he's honestly the closest thing to Obama that the Democrats have, more so than Booker. He has a very similar type of charisma and swagger, and I think he can appeal to people who don't normally ever consider voting Democratic.

He's also doing a nationwide voting rights campaign, which could bring him to national prominence without holding an elected office. Plus, if Iowa is still the first primary, he could easily import his Missouri campaign infrastructure in the same way Obama did.

I wouldn't count him out at all.

Probably because he’s charismatic. Experience in high offices (senate, governor, cabinet) is useful, but not inevitable. These qualifications are more important as president in my opinion: knowledge on domestic and foreign issues, a steady hand, leadership ability and bring people together.
