Hundreds of thousands are currently protesting in Romania over a bill to amend the penal code in the country, a move which many consider to weaken anti-corruption legislation and encourage abuses of power. Yesterday, the PSD-led government withdrew the bill, so it will be interesting to see how the protests go forward, especially since the election only just finished and the new government isn't even a month into its term.

Things are further complicated by the fact that President Klaus Ioahnnis of the National Liberal Party opposed the bill, and was calling for a referendum. In theory, this looks like a win for him, but we shall see, especially if the sentiment in the big cities is different from in the rural areas which played a big part in delivering the PSD victory in the last election.

Protests continued today, despite the bill being withdrawn. Watching some of the coverage on ProTV, I noticed a good number of US flags in the crowd, which made me happy. I also saw a lot of the 1989 Revolution flags with the hole in the middle, presumably a jab at the PSD's many former-communist members.

Preventing a law that would decriminalize corruption from going through is a tremendous outcome. Good for the people of Romania.

Tremendous respect for the people of Romania! I really doubt the people of my country or the people of the U.S. would fight so hard against corruption.

What sort of deranged politician would introduce crazy policies inciting mass protests within their first month of office?

Gotta love the people of Romania but some of these corruption amounts are in the tens of thousands. While in America corruption is legilized and you can give more than ×10,000 more.
