Both sides do it. Look at the colleges and universities. You get shut down for saying things that hurt BLM. I'm so proud of being a centrist.

Have you ever articulated a centrist political position here on these forums? Confining all political debate to posts of one sentence (or fewer) that only assert vague feelings on an issue without committing to any policy specifics does not make you a centrist.

What a brave stand. We agree on little, but good work Mitch.

How exactly is shutting down a Senator for telling the truth "brave"?

More proof that it is McConnell that is the true threat.

Well you see, Jeff Sessions is a special snowflake, and someone had to protect him from getting his feelings hurt.

The Senate just banned the words of Coretta Scott King to protect the feelings of a man it once deemed too racist to be a federal judge.

It's incredible to think that Sessions's racist history was less politically acceptable 30 years ago than it is today. The Republican Party has, undeniably, engaged in social regression; what's more disturbing, however, is how inconsequential that regression is to its voters.

So let me get this straight:

But what if a Senator does something or has a motive unbecoming of a Senator?! And what if that Senator is nominated to a position that must be confirmed by the Senate? How the f*&$ is the Senate supposed to debate that Senator's confirmation Huh Serious question.

Also, was it not considered unworthy conduct when Ted Cruz called Mitch McConnell a liar on the Senate floor?

Wait, they used rule 19 to block criticism of a nominee because they're a Senator? Horrible rule.

If Chuck Schumer has any balls he'd go up there and attempt to read the letter himself, and let every single Democrat follow him until they are all ordered to be silent.

The Republican Party thirty years ago wasn't as dependent on southern whites as it is now.

How beautiful this would have been. Sigh.

I'm not familiar with the exact language of the rule and so will not take a position on whether she broke it. If she indeed break it though, then it was right to silence her. Perhaps the rule needs to be changed, but while it remains on the books, it should be enforced, as should all other senate and house rules.

In other words, you can't say things that might hurt someone's feelings.  In which case, maybe senators shouldn't be eligible for cabinet positions because speaking honestly about them is too mean.

Is there any precedent for the rule being used in the way it was used? (i.e. to regulate debate of the nomination of a U.S. Senator to another position)

No, there isn't; this was a selective and petty use of the rule to penalize dissenting speech. Moreover, the chamber had the opportunity to vote to set precedent on whether or not it was sensible to apply the rule in this way, and the cowards voted on party lines. You can't fall back on, "But the rule says!"

*Puts on 5-dimensional chess thinking cap*

What if Senate Republicans are trying to help Warren win the nomination because they think she'd be easier to beat in a general election?

Wasn't that the thinking Democrats had with Trump?

Why didn't Senator Purdue get censured for mocking Chuck Schumer's 'fake tears', or Senator Cruz get censured for outright calling Mitch McConnell a LIAR on the Senate floor!

Republicans have no respect for the institutions of our government, which is why they're employing the same shenanigans as their Dear Leader. They always preach about how government is evil and then they get elected and prove it. Deplorable, but can't expect much integrity and statesmanship from the same people who are too afraid to ever publicly chastise the dictator-in-chief because muh party loyalty.

Roll Eyes because if she had done this while  reading a white male's words (like say Noam Chomsky or Karl Marx or john Dewey) clearly she would not have been silenced. Race baiting is gross when Democrats do it too.

The crazy bigger point is... Cabinet Nominee's are held to less scrutiny if the are a Senator (vs Nominee's who are not a Senator)

1. You are not a centrist

2. People don't really aim to be centrist, or say "I'm proud to be a centrist" ... most people just try to be real and honest with themselves

Udall, Booker, and a few others have since quoted the letter... without repercussions.
