how would an Obama vs Giuliani race have gone down? I'm thinking that under OTL 2008 conditions he probably would have lost by a wider margin then McCain due to social conservatives staying home or voting third party and his perception as a Wall Street aligned Republican after the economic collapse.

On the contrary, I have often felt that Giuliani was probably the only Republican in 2008 that could have possibly given Obama a run for his money.  I think a lot of people who were sick of the Bush administration in 2008 were still impressed by how Giuliani handled the events of 9/11.  I still think that Obama would have won, but I think it would have been closer.  Although you do make a good point about his social views potentially preventing a lot of conservatives from even voting.

Giuliani did horribly in early matchup polling and was loathed by social conservatives. Then again, same for Donald Trump.

Giuliani would struggle hard to shake off the Rockefeller Republican image, having been brought up and been an attorney in New York.
