This was in fact seriously discussed, though never went too far.  The 1958 Conservative landslide basically destroyed the CCF and reduced the Liberals to a rump.

Following that election, many Canadian social democrats and left-liberals spoke of creating a broad-based "progressive" party.  NDP Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer was involved.

Let's say a new party - the Liberal Democrats - was founded.  How does this impact Canadian politics?

It would eventually either edge out NDP or the Liberals, or cause a similar fracture on the right.
