If the dam goes, and inflicts significant damage, will Pussygrabber and his cabal be content to blame Liberals, or will he insist it was a terrorist attack?

Maddow did a piece on this a few days ago. Basically, the spillway is almost totally unusable right because of recent damage. But, they've had to keep it flowing because the water level is too high. They have an emergency spillway, but it's basically just a hillside near the dam. If they are forced to shut off the spillway, it will make the hillside erode badly and cause a lot of mud down steam. At the same time, if they let the spillway continue to bear the brunt of the water, the hillside might erode away anyway, but much closer to the dam itself.

Here's a picture of the spillway damage:

Here's what it looks like when it's normally in use:

And here's what it looks like now:

I have been following the Sacramento Bee all evening, and it looks like there isn't much risk of the Emergency spillway collapsing tonight because they have been sending an extremely large amount of water down the main, damaged spillway—this has caused the lake level to drop to the point where nothing is now coming over through the emergency one. The main, concrete spillway has likely gotten significantly worse, and is probably almost at complete failure, but they won't be able to assess the damage until tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, more rainy weather is expected and they are going to have to do something in the next few days to reinforce the emergency spillway, because 30 feet of the hill is currently at risk of collapsing...just multiply 30 feet by the surface area of the lake, and it's not hard to see how catastrophic that would be to this part of the Sacramento Valley.

To be fair, it is worth pondering what the federal response would be to such a disaster, since Trump is not fond of California. Let's pray that FEMA is allowed to assist the communities in the event of disaster.

@realDonaldTrump
Dems like @jerrybrowngov can't run their states. Berkeley hates free speech and Oroville is underwater. Sad!

The number being told to evacuate is some 130,000.  Area highways are clogged with traffic as people flee.

To make it clear:

1.  It is not the damaged spillway shown in the pictures above that is actually at risk of causing an uncontrolled release of water.

2.  It is the emergency "auxillary" spillway to the left that is really not visible in the pictures since it just looks like a hillside with trees.  That was used for the 1st time in the dam's 50 year history and the erosion was so bad that it could undermine that structure and cause a flood.

3.  In order to deal with that, they have greatly increased flow into the damaged main spillway from the pictures above which is now badly eroded as well.

4.  The good news is that this, along with drier weather that has decreased inflow into the reservoir, means the amount of water flowing over the emergency "auxillary" spillway has nearly stopped which might allow them to shore up the structure before another big round of storms moves in over the next couple weeks.

They have lowered the lake level enough to stop water flowing over the emergency spillway.  This is good news and means a flood is much less likely.

The question remains:  Can they lower the reservoir enough or introduce a temp fix in time for the upcoming rains?

Even if the Emergency Spillway were to fail, the problem isn't that the area will be completely flooded. What's at stake is whether the levies can handle the sudden increase in water without failing catastrophically.

All in all, it should be fine. The main dam is safe and it's likely things will improve as time progresses.

Looks like the Federal government ignored warnings 12 years ago about this dam. Civilized nations with a working government don't have these issues, catch up America.

We had to spend $2 trillion creating terrorists in Iraq to keep us safe instead.

This was a failure of the state of California, not the federal government Jfern.  The Bush administration denied the request at the behest of state officials who assured them that the upgrades would be unnecessary.  The same state water department that said the dam was fine and there was no risk of any problems just 2 days ago.

This is not a failure of the federal government... again.. the blame lies solely on the state of California and their inability to properly manage water.

Really hope this isn’t playing out so bad, but a bad situation for the residents of that area. If the dam breaks, it would be horrible. Nevertheless, the local authorities did a good job with their preparations.
