After church tonight there was a hosting of a talk and Q&A session from one of our members, a woman who works for the Minnesota Council of Churches' refugee resettlement program. She had a lot of interesting information and gave out some great handouts on refugee policies, how to help, etc. But she did say one thing that I know a lot of people would be disturbed by, near the end she said something like "and I often wonder if God is bringing them here so they can hear the good news" and gave a brief mention of refugees that have been converted by their program.

But of course, I vote no. In fact, any churches telling them they should not and effectively closing their doors to them would be bigoted.

From a Christian perspective: No.
From a non-Christian perspective: Yes.

If that's the only reason they want them to come yes, if not no. I completely understand it within the context of Christian beliefs even though i'm an Atheist.

If the condition or expectation for inviting them is conversion, then yes, it's wrong and bigoted. Refugees should be as entitled to their religion as anyone else and that should have no bearing on their admission into this country or effect on the desire of "Hipster Christians" to extend a helping hand.

No, of course not, as long as the conversion attempts are not unduly coercive or heavy handed.

It's not as bigoted as the heavily coercing conversions of Christians and smaller minorities to Islam that's been happening for over 1000 years in the region. Millions of people of all walks of life are the descendants of those who were essentially forced to give up their faith for their well being.

If they are going to convert, they should convert to an actual, serious religion. I far prefer Islam over hipster Christianity (and wholeheartedly support a hipster Christian ban).

The act of trying to convert someone should be banned.

Literally nothing stated in the first amendment abridges such ban.

Even ignoring the freedom of religion clauses it would be a clear violation of violating free speech.

And even despite that you'd have trouble getting a single vote in Congress for it.

FWIW she wasn't even talking about converting them to hipster Christianity but just Christianity in general. As politicus pointed out on AAD, how much success has my church had in converting Somalis? The answer is: not much, but it's almost an all white church anyway so it's not surprising it doesn't have any Somali converts.

(And a bunch of female Hmong Millennials for whatever reason. And some Hispanics, but very white Hispanics.)

The act of trying to convert someone should be banned.

You realize this is tantamount to a ban of the practice of Evangelical Christianity, right?

To seek to take away from them religious beliefs that they clutch close to their heart; a connection to the community and the family they left behind, when they arrive is deeply sad.

I find proselytism a bit distasteful in general and Afleitch makes a very good point, but I don't think they're bigoted per se, no.

Plenty of middle eastern refugees are already Christians of a much better form than "hipster evangelical"

So you would not approve of people leaving Islam for a gay accepting form of Christianity? Seriously?
