If nominated to moderate I will serve, though I certainly think all of you would regret it.

Either DFB or Smilo's idea of disbanding the board seems fine to me.

Got a A in both intro to micro and into to macro in college .

-More qualified than Peebs, for sure, but less so than me.

Yah but one thing which I don't have is time required to moderate a board so I won't apply for it .

The less time spent moderating, the better.

The board should probably be abolished.

If we disband it, can we have a Sociology board?

Or merge the two like so:
Name: [Economics and Sociology]*
Description: Also Known as [The Study of Insanity]*

*The words in brackets may be switched with the words in the other pair of brackets

Disbanding it makes no sense, and I like to have all economics threads separated. However, a sociology board would be a great addition.

The Economics board was a great place to post pure economics articles during the heady days of the crisis of '08-'09, and again during the euro crisis '10-'12. That was clearly not history, at the time. Now that the economy has broadly improved, there is less dramatic news to post there. It would pick up again in the event of another crisis, but that may be years or even decades away.

(I'm not interested in getting an e-mail every time someone responds to a thread in which I've already posted.)

You can disable that function.

I wasn't here at the time, but the advantage of holding those discussions on a board separate from US General seems questionable. It limits the discussion to posters who believe that they have more of an interest in economics, which would be useful if those were also the posters with substantive knowledge of the discipline and self-awareness about the limits of their knowledge, but in my experience that is far from reality.

No one has a "substantive knowledge of the discipline." I've taken PhD level courses at a top 5 economics program and I don't have a "substantive knowledge" of it. People with a bachelor's in it don't have a "substantive knowledge" of it. People who've only taken a few courses certainly don't have substantive knowledge.

Jesus Christ, what have I awakened? Please forget that I ever used those words, because they obviously do not share anything that even approaches the same meaning for the two of us.

As long as someone has an appropriate level of epistemic humility, there's a good chance that they are capable of making what I would view as a quality contributions to the kind of econ discussions we have here. They don't need to know how to interpret all of the equations in a typical article. They certainly don't need to take the quasi-religious attitude that you and realisticidealist seem to favor, in which True Economics becomes some kind of inscrutable theological truth.

They're two different things. Having enough economic knowledge in terms of process/methodology/standards/etc. to run/contribute to a forum board is quite different from the broader claim of "understanding economics" on any sort of intuitive/self-apparent level.

The Economics board does seem pretty desolate. Wouldn't it be better to merge it with one or more of the General Discussion boards? Yes the topics don't mix but some of these boards don't have enough activity between them that would make any of the threads/discussions in each board any less noticeable if they were merged. Merging two or more low-activity boards might actually boost their activity more by drawing in more users who might want to respond to threads that they wouldn't have otherwise looked at, being in a board they usually have no interest in viewing.

I dunno. Just a thought.

As cool as that sounds, this forum's record suggests that a 'sociology board' would quickly and inevitably devolve into a bunch of mindless threads along the lines of "how do gay black Mormons vote in South Dakota?" or "how would this hypothetical bisexual Korean rocket scientist vote in Oaxaca?", just like how 'international what-ifs' has become entirely "who would you vote for" and 'book reviews' has become "what are you reading"/"i read a book and i liked it!"

I would say 'lol' at the idea Leip would bother even making a new board, but he did (regrettably) make the 2020 board before the 2016 election had ended. Maybe that's just how he works - only make a new board if it will be highly trafficked and extremely low content

Right, but this thread's title is not accurate so the other chatter here is meaningless.
