http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=2&

So, I'm not from the Upper Midwest or Northwest!!  Many people (who only have influences from one place get three cities right next to each other, but mine was more generic- anywhere in the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic.  It guessed Montgomery, Shreveport, and Mobile.  My least similar were Tacoma, Seattle, and Portland (OR).  But, North Carolina seems to be the darkest red on that map if we look at the whole states, just darker than Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Arkansas.

Why isn't the picture from the Gallery showing again?  Here is a link to the map: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html?_r=2&r=82000850180010b00000j04000n0400j8811000020200l000j&

Correctly guessed MI. Unsurprisingly, "Devil's Night" was the give-away. My use of "cougar" pointed to Washington State.

Tacoma, Spokane, and Salt Lake City. So, pretty close. I know I got Salt Lake City because I say "potato bug." It's weird, though, because when I was in Salt Lake City, I noticed that people there said certain things similarly to my relatives in Tacoma, but differently from how I say it. For example, the word "shot" becomes a bit more drawn-out, almost as if you're saying "shaw-it."

One very stereotypically Seattle thing I do that I'm kind of surprised wasn't on this test is that more and more people are starting to pronounce the "a" sound in "bag" and "flag" as an "eh," so it becomes "beg" and "fleg." Some other localisms I use are:

Jo jos - potato wedges
Tolo - a girls-ask-guys dance, (fun fact, this originated from a native word meaning "win, success, achievement")
Spendy - expensive
Coug it - to lose (usually a sports game) at the last minute in a spectacular or creative fashion
And basically all coffee slang.

It guessed Fresno/Oxnard/Reno. I am from Fresno originally, so spot on. Apparently it is a very Fresno thing to have never heard of drive-through liquor stores before.

As an Australian, my most similar cities are NY, LA, and Santa Clarita, with the entire western US red.

This what I got y'all! Grin :

They were pretty accurate considering that I actually do live in Jackson.

Baton Rouge and Richmond were 2 & 3 respectively.

It guessed Madison, Rockford, and Aurora, so pretty much dead on. I was surprised to see how many people pronounce 'cot' and 'caught' the same way, it seems pretty weird to me.

In all my trips overseas, my foreign fellow travelers always remarked that my American accent seemed your standard middle American dialect.  Its interesting though -when I was talking to my parents over the holidays, they said that one of the reasons why I was singled out for bullying when I came back to the United States was because my accent was noticeably different from the kids around me, given I had spent my childhood overseas.

I had no idea my speech -apart from my stuttering- was that different.

Got Glendale twice. Use of Sunshower is probably what got me New York.

Reno, NV/Santa Rosa, CA/Oceanside, CA.

-Very strong resemblance to the two Jimmy Carter elections:

Makes sense, considering the east/west divide in 1976, and my clearly west coast accent.

Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland/Vancouver were my top three cities.

My map looks similar to Goldwater's map.
