In 1944 the Republican party seriously considered nominating Pacific Front War hero General Douglas MacArthur for President. He was rabidly anti-New Deal, a hawk on foreign policy (obvioulsy), and had great name recogintion. At the Republican Convention in July 1944, he withdrew his name from the running because he felt he needed to stay the course in Japan. Only one delegate (from MacArthur's native home of Wisconsin) voted for him over Dewey, "Because i'm a man, not a jellyfish!"

What-If Douglas MacArthur had won the GOP Nomination in 1944? Could he have toppled FDR and his New Deal Army?

Too bad Stassen kicked his butt in the Wisconsin Primary though. Must have been emabarasing to lose to Stassen, especially in your own home state! Surprise

I don't think any republican could have done better than Dewey in '44 the electoral vote is pretty big for FDR but Dewey got almost 46% of the popular vote.

Flip a few states where Dewey got within 4% of FDR
