Posted below is a county map I have created of an alternate 2016 election. On the map, Republicans are purplish red; Democrats are blue. The map shows a Republican landslide. Based off the map, guess which states went Democratic, and which ones went Republican. Which states were close? Which were landslides?

There's a better quality map here: http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/novelas/images/9/9a/County_Map_of_Hypothethical_2016_Election.PNG/revision/latest?cb=20170216044047

I see what you are saying. But any thoughts, or guesses as to how this scenario could arise?

Republican landslide, with republicans winning states like Illinois, Oregon, Washington, Maine (At large), Virginia, Minnesota, maybe California and some other states.

Democrats probably are able to hold Maryland, maybe Vermont, maybe Rhode Island and some other states.

I don't know for what party NY voted, but I'm saying Democrat by a small margin.

Minnesota is ambiguous actually.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to say, I think it went for the GOP , but it can be a democratic state.

It's almost identical to 2016, so it really depends on the margins in Minneapolis vs. the rest of the state.

Maybe this?

It looks like California, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland were close.

It looks like California, Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland were close.

The actual map of this scenario is this:

The close states were as follows:

Red denotes states won by Republican Governor R.H. Dickenson; Blue denotes those won by Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

(Non-Atlas, Network colors)

Margin of victory under 1% (10 electoral votes)

Maryland, 0.99%

Margin of victory under 5% (191 electoral votes)

Michigan, 1.14%
Hawaii, 1.43%
Oregon, 1.83%
New Mexico, 1.90%
Washington, 2.30%
New York, 2.75%
Florida, 2.85%
Connecticut, 3.94%
North Carolina, 4.00%
California, 4.72%
Georgia, 4.94%

Margin of victory over 5%, but less then 10% (138 electoral votes)

Minnesota, 5.21%
Virginia, 5.51%
Illinois, 7.36%
Wisconsin, 7.45%
New Jersey, 7.72%
Maine, 7.92%
Maine's 1st congressional district, 7.98%
Massachusetts, 8.25%
Nevada, 9.03%
Arizona, 9.43%
Ohio, 9.73%
Pennsylvania, 9.76%

Can anyone guess as to why the results turned out they did? And how the candidates managed to win the states?

Only a magic spell could produce a scenario like this.

I just don't think it makes sense that California would vote to the left of relatively conservative states such as North Carolina and Florida.

I see what you're saying. I will see about changing the margins.
