McCain has apparently had it with the chaos in the Trump administration:

“I think that the Flynn issue obviously is something that shows that in many respects this administration is in disarray and they’ve got a lot of work to do,” said McCain, a known Trump critic, even as he praised Trump’s defence secretary. “The president, I think, makes statements [and] on other occasions contradicts himself. So we’ve learned to watch what the president does as opposed to what he says,” he said.

McCain is a bloodthirsty warmonger, who cares what he has to say about anything.

We watch McCain because I want to see when the moderate Republicans get off the crazy train.

Well, he must preserve his fictional "wise senior statesman" image in American political discourse. I've yet to see him assume his culpability in the rise of the Tea Party and the Trump brand of politics by elevating Palin into national politics.

Thank you, Senator McCain. I may disagree on whole bunch of issues with McCain, but at least he has the guts to stand up to President Wanna-be dictator Pussygrabber.

McCain et al. are presumably happy to have Mattis, Kelly, etc. there.  The people they don't want are those who aren't in positions that need confirmation by the Senate, like Bannon, Flynn, Kushner, and of course Trump himself.  McCain would probably agree with this take:

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/02/trump-ignoring-cabinet-235124

that there are "grown ups" in Trump's Cabinet, but that he doesn't listen to them.

I hope that McCain's spine will actually show when it comes time for congress to vote on Trump's proposed legislation, but I'm not holding my breath.

-Very much doubt it, even if you include just anti-Trump Republicans.

well, i don't know about the rank-and-files but of the many many many republicans authors and thinker and pundists i have followed until election day who either hated or doubted trump, only a SMAAAAAALL minority does so now.

after a few weeks of "you forced me to defend trump with your liberl stupidity", it has transformed to "he isn't SOOOOOO bad" and some even went full hannity.

It's not clear to me that he actually disagrees with Trump that much on domestic policy.  He disagrees with him on foreign policy, but that's an area where the president has a lot of room to act independently, without it coming up for a vote in Congress.  And as I said upthread, it's also not clear that McCain really has a problem with the members of Trump's foreign policy team who are subject to Senate confirmation.  He likes Mattis, for example.  Who he doesn't like are the people in Trump's orbit who aren't subject to Senate confirmation, like Bannon and Flynn, who seem to be more in synch with Trump's thinking than are the "grown ups".
