He has appeal to both the establishment and conservative factions of the party, so no one from either flank will have any justification to oppose him.

This is in the event that he were to become president.

Yeah. Been saying something similar for a while. Pence is one of few Republicans who could actually benefit from being Trump's VP.

Pence is really in a unique category, there are very few people besides him and Scott Walker who can fit this mold. They are probably the only 2 major republicans who are respected by both the Jeb and Cruz wings of the party at the same time.

I've been dreaming of a Pence-Walker 2020 ticket since the election!

This is why I think he could pull off a win in the general election as the Party nominee in 2020 even in the face of a Trump resignation of impeachment, especially if that event occurs earlier on in 2018 or so.
I think if Trump resigns before impeachment that you would probably be correct, there is no way Pence wins in 2020 if trump gets impeached. On the other hand if Trump dies either of natural causes or gets assassinated, Pence would probably enter office with a large amount of goodwill and be nearly impossible to defeat

If Trump were assassinated, his base would frame it as the establishment conspiring to take him out. There would be no goodwill there, it would either be negative or in the most optimistic scenario, neutral.

The Alex Jones crowd is a very small part of Trump's base

Breitbart would be asserting the same as Alex Jones at that point.
