I would have voted for Paul, with Barry O as a second choice and Huckabee as third. Romney, McCain, and HRC look especially awful in retrospect.

Again, I will not respond more than four times per page in this thread, so as to keep more voices open.

No write-ins (this means you, Crab Cake). Only candidates that stay in a month after Iowa count here.

Was McCain then, am still McCain now -- if anything, more vehemently so.

EDIT: Since people are giving their next choices, I'll note that of these six I'd rank McCain > Romney > Huckabee > Hillary > Obama > Paul. I'm really broadly sympathetic to libertarianism (if the younger Paul ran, he'd probably be second after McCain in this ranking), and I'm willing to tolerate candidates who want to cut foreign aid even to countries I support, but wanting to end our support for Israel at the UN puts any candidate at the end of the list, regardless of the rest of their platform. If Amash is the Republican nominee in 2020, he won't get any more support from me than Donald Trump did. Tom Massie is fine by me. Justin Amash isn't.

Supported Paul at the time - inasmuch as a fifteen year old Canadian could - would still support him today despite drifting away from libertarianism.

No one voting for Ron Paul is going to change their vote with hindsight.

Clinton - liked her just as much back then, and maybe we could have nominated a 8-years more mature and experienced Obama last year.

Hillary. She would have served two terms and Obama would've won in 2016.

I'd have voted for Hillary (Obama 08 supporter) because anything with a D next to its name would've won in 2008, and Obama has he charisma to combat Trump.

These would be my top two:
1. Romney
2. McCain

In many ways in hindsight was eerily similar to the candidates 1980

Romney = Ronald Reagan
McCain = George HW Bush
Huckabee = John Connally
Hillary =  Jimmy Carter
Obama = Ted Kennedy
Paul = Ed Clark

Mike Huckabee, of course.  Maybe our country wouldn't be where it is today if we had a staunch socon elected in 2008.

-Both yours and Atlas's preferences seem to be in order of ideology (from left to right) as inferred from candidates' constituencies in the 08 primaries. Though, in real life, Paul is far to the right of Huckabee, and HRC is to the Left of Obama.

Can't imagine a Universe where I vote in a Democratic primary ever, so I would vote for Huckabee so that he is the one who gets destroyed in November, allowing an electable moderate conservative - who faces far less pressure from the base to tact right on cultural issues - can make it through the primary in good shape and beat Obama in 2012.
