Barack Obama and Joe Biden are elected in 2008.

Vice President Biden tells President Obama in January of 2012 that he will not be running for VP in 2012 due to health concerns.

Who does President Obama then pick for his running mate for VP for the 2012 election?

If I was Obama, that would be my shortlist:

Hillary Clinton- she was still very popular, experienced and respected. Definitely has to be in any objective shorlist.
Tom Vilsack- an administration member, and a 'folksy' rural politician who could boost Obama with this constituency.
Russ Feingold- if I wanted to add even more energy and enthusiasm to the ticket, that'd be the way to go. Russ would fire up the progressive base furthermore.
Tim Kaine- safe, solid, likeable pick who can effectively continue Biden's role.
Mark Warner- a more charismatic Tim Kaine, if I wanted more energy in the ticket, but less Biden-esque.

There was, according to Game Change, consideration of replacing Biden with Hillary Clinton. She was popular, respected and qualified. She would probably get it.

Bayh was shortlisted and evidently the runner up. But I think it would've been Hillary.

Evan Bayh or Howard Dean seem most likely to me.
