I think some loose, semi-formal observer membership is fine. I don't like broad multinational alliances/organizations in general but the more mundane ones like the OAS, the Commonwealth, etc don't matter much.

Plus this will never ever happen.

I'd be fine with it...having commonwealth citizenship would be a pretty nice thing to have.

I'd rather have the UK remove Trump from office and temporarily make the US a colony until we can elect a sane government. Kind of like what they did with Ian Smith and Rhodesia in 1979.

Note that the Queen is not involved with the government of most of the 52 members of the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the British Commonwealth) such as India. She is only sovereign of the 16 Commonwealth Realms.

God can you imagine how many fat white guys dressed as Paul Revere would descend on Washington if Obama proposed this?

All this is proposing is a future associate membership. It has nothing to do with any erosion of sovereignty, but rather a deepening of integration of voluntary members of this commonwealth of ex-British colonial states. Why shouldn't we participate in this? It places no restrictions on us, but can help strengthen our ties with the UK and other English speaking nations.

There's pluses and minuses to it. It seems asinine and probably has some dark, if not racist, motive.

Going to a Westminster-style parliamentary system  that has done an excellent job of keeping the crazies out of high office would be well worth it.

Impossible, it would require substantial changes to the US constitution that will simply not pass.

Don't be so sure. The GOP is close to being able to re-write the Constitution at will. And there is plenty of evidence that they'll stay in lockstep for anything their masters want.

As long as they are also able to manipulate the stock market.

The British Commonwealth welcomed South Africa back after it abolished Apartheid.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha

This is the kind of thing a 13-year-old who just learned about the existence of the Commonwealth would propose. I don't oppose joining the Commonwealth, but it accomplishes literally nothing because the Commonwealth is totally irrelevant and powerless (and the US might not even be welcomed). That said, reading the article, it's not a Trump administration proposal, just some random Brits.

This is factually correct.

The Commonwealth is utterly irrelevant, has absolutely no power or influence, and for most people from Commonwealth countries, the thing basically starts and ends with the fact that they organise the useless version of the Olympics.

The only people who ascribe any importance to it are the swivelled eye types who wish the empire still existed.

Guys, two things

1) The Commonwealth is a nothing organization now except as an opportunity for heads of government/state to get together in a massive junket and 'discuss important issues'. It does not require recognizing the Queen as Head of State or anything like that - Most Commonwealth members are in fact Republics. There are some Commonwealth members which no history of British connections but have joined for a variety of reasons - Rwanda and Mozambique are two.

2) Given all that I've said, this is a big nothingburger of a story. This is The Daily Torygraph wanking over the idea of a UK-US ALLIANCE of the anglospheric non-swarthy nations. See also: CANZUK. This isn't happening and if it did, the world would end soon anyway as we would drown in the cum of the British Tabloid and Tory Press ejaculating all at once.
