Impossible, it would require substantial changes to the US constitution that will simply not pass.

Not really.  Making the Queen be our Head of State would, but that's not a requirement for joining the Commonwealth.  Constitutionally, joining the Commonwealth would be no different than us joining any other international organization.

Most Americans (and quite frankly, most people in the majority-white Anglosphere countries) are not familiar with the distinction between the Commonwealth of Nations and Commonwealth realms. I think we can forgive some degree of ignorance on this matter.
