It also shows how incompetent Arizona Republicans are.

Because the law criminalizes well-established rights enumerated in the First Amendment, it will be struck down in the courts, the sole defense that many have against a despotic President and a legislature as servile to him on the whole as the British Parliament was toward George III -- and some wacky state legislatures.

Rioting is not an exercise of free speech, so perhaps people who smash a store window or torch a car can be subjected to civil forfeiture for such deeds. But the demonstration is not itself a riot.

We have an obvious solution for this stuff in November 2018.

I wouldn't trust Trump-appointed judges to overrule this, though.

Do Arizonan Republicans really want to commit party suicide by putting protest demonstrations (though some may be peaceful) on par with "terrorism?"

I guess they want to lose in 2018 and 2020.

It sounds like Republicans have given up on pretending they actually care for liberty and democracy.

Of course my state's legislature didn't want to miss out on a chance to embarrass the state.

I suspect it's more that they're confident they won't face fair elections in 2018 and 2020. What are you going to do when they rig the vote (by various means, including voter IDs)? Protest?

Republicans are babies. They can't handle 1% of what they dish out.

Trump could literally privatize every industry, but if we get stuff like this, it'll all be worth it.

This may be a matter of Arizona Republicans trying to get what they can while they can...

Do peaceful protesters really hurt nearby businesses? Not if they end up shopping in some local store after the protest.

Rioters are a different story, and they deserve to have the criminal code thrown at them for assaults or property destruction.

The Washington Post reports that 18 states are now considering legislation to curb protests in one way or another:

This is one of the many, many reasons why I find it mind-boggling how libertarians can possibly support Trump, or any modern republicans aside from Paul and Amash. The majority of Republicans don't care about the rights of other citizens unless they happen to agree with them.
